Wada walked the first batter that he faced in each of the first 2 innings.

He got away with it in the 1st and 4th innings, but it cost him in the 2nd inning (in which the AAA-Braves scored their only run off of him.)

With runners on 1st and 2nd base with one out in the 5th inning, he got out of it by striking out Dan Uggla, and then getting Philip Gosselin to popout to end the threat.

Wada was the beneficiary of excellent defense, as the Tides turned 4 double plays. On the final double play in Wada's 7th and final inning of work, Yamiaco Navarro actually threw the ball behind his back (it was his only play) to Jonathan Schoop before Schoop relayed the ball to 1st base to complete the play.

TIDES SWEEP DURHAM BULLS

Needing to win both games of today's doubleheader with the AAA-Durham to maintain their lead for the lone wildcard playoff spot in the International League, the Tides did just that.

In the first game, the Tides rallied from a 5-1 deficit late in the game by scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to win it by a score of 7-5.

In the second game, Tsuyoshi Wada threw 6 shutout innings to pace the Tides, as they won it on a walk-off single by Yamaico Navarro with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to sweep the doubleheader.

The Tides have gone 11-5 in their last 16 games to vault themselves into the playoff position that they currently hold.

6 shutout innings for his final AAA regular season outing.

With 2 outs in the 5th inning, Jonathan Schoop made an error on a slow grounder to continue the inning and put runners on 1st and 2nd base, but Wada got the next batter to fly up to end the threat.

Wada then threw one more shutout inning before departing.

In his last 6 outings, Wada has allowed 6 earned runs over 37.57 innings, for an E.R.A. of 1.43.

The T IDES are currently in line for the lone wildcard in the International League, so there's a possibility that he will pitch in the AAA playoffs.

Johnson's longest outing of the (AAA) season.

1 run over 6.33 innings.

10 strikeouts, 2 walks.

And it was a BIG game, because the Tides needed to win this game to keep their 1-game lead over Rochester for the lone wildcard spot in the International League playoffs.

Tides Drop Finale, Fall Short in Playoff Bid

Rochester takes final Wild Card spot.

(By Ian Locke)

http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130902&content_id=59330182&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_t568&sid=t568

The Tides actually finished in a tie with AAA-Rochester for the lone wildcard playoff spot in the International League:

ROCHESTER:OO 77-67

NORFOLK:OOOo 77-67

http://www.milb.com/standings/index.jsp?lid=117&sid=l117

But the rules are that there is no one-game playoff (as is the case in the majors) for teams that are tied for the wildcard spot. Norfolk lost out on head-to-head competition (6 games to 2) for the season to the AAA-Red Wings.

Congratulations to the Tides on a solid 2013 season.

They fought right down to the final game of the season before they were eliminated (on a tie-breaker. They had the same record as Rochester, who got the lone wildcard spot, based on head-to-head play.)

I'm proud of them.

And thanks to the mods for changing the inane original name of the thread.
