Ah hell, let's re-sign him

It's easy to look at Nick and think he must be about 43 years old, but he's only 30, which is not ancient for a corner fielder. The way he swings, I don't see why he shouldn't keep putting up a high OBP for three or four more years at least. Speed is not a factor for Nick, as he doesn't take risks on the bases, so losing a step won't cost him much. I certainly have more faith in a corner fielder like Markakis holding his value at age 33/34 than I do a middle infielder like Hardy.

Among 93 qualified AL batters, Nick ranks 19th in OBP at .362. The next Oriole on the list is Nelson Cruz, who ranks 44th with a .329 OBP and then Machado, 50th at .324. Cruz will be gone next year. So, if the O's want a leadoff hitter with a high OBP and they don't bring back Nick, they better have someone else in mind.

I'd offer him 4/48 and wouldn't mind if he spent the last year or two at DH or 1B, as long as he continued to put up a .350+ OBP. Isn't that what everyone has been clamoring for?

On a side note, is there anybody more emotionless than Nick? Not a knock. Just saying. The guy never even cracks a smile. I'm fine with it, he does his job. Not needed to be a good clubhouse guy or anything.

Guy is just a robot.

His interviews are great. Right to the point. Well "umm" "you know" "umm" "you know" what I mean :laughlol:

You don't build a team that stays in the playoff race year after year by letting great players walk. You either re-sign them, or you trade them. But of course you can't trade them when they're just about to become a FA anyway, usually, unless some contender is absolutely desperate at the trade deadline and has no other alternatives.

Angelos is going to have to put up the money to finance a team that is legitimately good. If you try to luck into elite players for dirt cheap, you're only going to build a club that can get it done once or twice per generation. You lose a lot more fans (and attendance, and sales) in the long run by having years of suck. It's much better for business if you are in contention every year, even if you only make it to the playoffs occasionally. Nobody likes to watch a buncha losers.

I hope Peter sees that even from a purely financial perspective, paying the big bucks for these guys is going to do more for his team, his city, and his pocketbook than being Ebeneezer Scrooge. Nobody ever liked a miser.

"Hey, who are you calling Scrooge???"

1. Nick is a pretty bad base runner, so I'm not sure losing more speed isn't going to cost him much.

2. You want to pay someone with an OPS below .800 at 30 years old, 12 million to be your 1B or DH at 33 and 34 years old?

I don't know. I think Hardy is more like a Mike Bordick. He takes good care of himself, he is extremely intelligent, he positions himself correctly all the time, he is the best tagger in the business. Skills like these do not decline as much as the athletic rangy shortstop guys. Will JJ go back to the 20-25 HR guy? Probably not. But a guy who makes all the plays, never makes an error, hits .270...for a three year deal I think he is our best option.

Agree.

Not like we have a bonafid blue chip SS prospect down on the farm to groom as the next heir, or do we?
