The Case for Davis

BTW there is almost no argument against putting CD on the WS roster. Because of the NL rules. Would anyone seriously rather have Kelly Johnson or Paredes as a PH instead of Davis? I wouldn't necessarily start him at third for defensive reasons, but as a LH PH in an NL park he has huge value.
I agree and again it's really a question of how Buck decides to use him.

Booed at Camden Yards for Games 6 and 7? I don't think so. Even in the WS there would only be 3 road games.

There might be some. People upset by his actions. It would be embarrassing at home and on national tv. Hopefully those idiots are drowned out by the cheering of those happy to have him back.

No to the ALCS roster.

Yes to the WS roster, but there is no way you start him UNLESS Flash or Pearce have a horrid ALCS. I just can't see rocking the boat. If you get the the WS, go with what got you there. CD as PH off the bench works just fine for me.

This is a no-brainer. No to ALCS, yes to world series. Our mvp made a mistake with PEDs and has been forgiven and has been a tremendous team player. Chris Davis has given enough of himself over the last 3 years to be given a second chance and to be welcomed back by his teammates. I don't care what the blow dried espn commentators have to say about it and I'm sure the players and management don't either.

Here's another question. If we play the way we have been playing' date=' what do you do with Davis in the World Series? Start him at 3B and sit Flaherty? Start him at 1B and put Pearce in the OF? on the bench?[/quote']

I think Pearce in the OF could be a major possibility. Heck, Buck put Delmon out there on Sunday for nearly the entirety of the game.

Worst case, Davis in the WS gives you a Hail Mary pinch hitter. Need a potential long ball from the bottom half of the order? You know who to call.

Buck talked about changing the karma to set up the double play Sunday. I think the karma could be right if we are fortunate enough to get to the World Series, but it isn't now. Ryan Flaherty's in a good place, and aside from the implicit condoning/tarnishing points, there's also his psyche to protect for the Kansas City series.

How do injuries work in the playoffs? Lets just say Kelly Johnson stubs his toe in the bathroom of his hotel after game 5 and has to miss the rest of the playoffs can the Orioles replace him with a player that just so now happens to be allowed to play because their suspension is over? Or if your entire team gets hurt you cant replace them?

    • Hopefully Hyde will strongly remind of that fact.
    • Generally it allows the runner to slide well outside home plate and just swipe the hand to tag home, which doesn’t present much of a target.
    • I doubt the O’s will look past it, given that Oakland just beat the Yankees 2 out of 4 in the Bronx.
    • You know life is good when there are threads like these. Burnes + our lineup tonight. Wow
    • In 26 games, the A’s have scored 4+ runs only 9 times, and 5+ only 3 times.  The O’s have been held under 4 runs only 4 times and under 5 runs only 10 times in 24 games.
    • I think of it as a "trap series" because it would be easy to look past it for the Yankees coming to town on Monday.
    • I'll accept that! Now that we've gotten that out of the way, that's kind of a carte blanche to keep on about Jigger Statz and the '22 Cubs. I knew I'd heard Statz' name, and it's because he spent about 18 years playing for the Los Angeles Angels in the old Pacific Coast League when it was pretty close to being a 3rd major before the actual majors expanded to the west coast. He played off and on for them from the age of 22 to 28, then every year from age 31-44. He had 3356 hits in the PCL, hit .315, almost 600 doubles. Many, many players in that era had long careers in the PCL or the American Association or International League. A lot of them every bit as good as guys who had 15-year MLB careers. This was the same timeframe where the Orioles were winning seven straight IL titles with teams that certainly could have finished mid-pack in the AL/NL. Other '22 Cubs included Hack Miller, who looked like Hack Wilson or a fire hydrant (take your pick), and played many years for Oakland in the PCL. Zeb Terry played four years for the Angels. Ray Grimes had almost 4000 minor league PAs. Hooks Cotter played 10+ years in the high minors. Joe Klugman spent a decade in the Southern Association. That would have been a great era to follow, with 16 MLB teams, but countless other really competitive teams just a notch below. And this was mostly before affiliations took hold, so these teams were all trying their darnedest to win. They weren't just 3-month stopovers for the Cards and Dodgers' best prospects. If you were in Baltimore in 1922 and you ask 100 kids who their team was, it was overwhelmingly going to be the Orioles. Not the Senators or Yanks or whatever, but the home town team.
