Rosenthal: No Deal

I don't think you're thread title is reasonable. That's your interpretation, and it's a stretch. We could see changes in the next few days that do or don't involve Roberts. But opening day is less that a week away. I think it's time to start embracing the team we've got. Even if it is like one of those "asses out" hugs.

I suggest that you do not like what is printed so you chose to make fun of it or ignore it. The fact that the Cubs pursuit of Roberts may go into the season is what this quote is all about.

I did make this up. I am not slanting it. I am reading something that is written in the Chicago Tribune as fact from the GM of the Cubs. This is not a sportswriter projecting, this is a Cubs decision maker talking.

You may not like what he said but he can't deny that the Chicago Tribune reported that he said it.

I actually don't care either way. If we keep him, great. If we trade him, we're going to be receiving some nice prospects. With the interpretation you are taking, his quote is too vague to be accepted as a stance.

I agree. It more of an indication then a stance. There will have to be more comments to re-efforce this comment before we will know for sure. However, I thought it is worth pointing out what Hendry is quoted as saying.

1st Point: Hendry does not go to is second baseman and explain "where I'm coming from" with the pursue of Roberts if the pursue is over. Hendry talks in present tense not past tense like 'where I was coming from'.

2nd Point: Hendry say he is thrill to start the season with DeRose at 2B. Not that DeRose is his second baseman.

DeRosa has been very public recently with his feelings about the Roberts deal. I disagree with your assumption that Hendry wouldn't go to him if the deal were off. Why wouldn't he go to him and reassure him. MacPhail has had conversations with Brob hasn't he?

Present and Past tense? Do you think you might be reading a little too much into this?

I could be or maybe I am not. Rosenthal said no deal before opening day. He did not say no deal. Now Hendry talks to his 2nd baseman about why he is pursuing Roberts. I think there is a good chance that some on the Hangout are declaring the Cubs pursuit of Robert dead when its only postponed until after the season starts.

Hendry wants Roberts for a good reason. He gives his team as better chance to go deep into the playoffs. He is not likely to give up on that because he acquires Johnson. Johnson is a backup not a difference maker. I think we have to give Hendry a little credit of knowing that he needs to improve his team and sees Roberts as a catalyst for his offense.

I think we're better off keeping Roberts if Pie's not available, which he clearly isn't. We have 3 or 4 Gallaghers already and the rest of the package is so-so if it's Veal, Cedeno and whomever.

I'm not saying it's not a good offer for Roberts, but I am saying that after all of this crap, I prefer keeping Roberts until we can fleece somebody. I think MacPhail could get more outta somebody at the break who's within striking distance and needs an offensive sparkplug.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

That is a creepy image. He isn't beating a dead horse, he's punching it. Plus he's wearing a tie, he has no face, and the sky is black. What weirdo came up with that little piece of animation?

    • Good guess. Would be more impressive if they hadn't already announced it!
    • Yea, Tiger SHOULD have. He dominated his sport unlike anyone ever has in basically any sport. He absolutely wins way more if he wasn’t a knucklehead, didn’t get hurt, etc….thats not even up for debate.
    • I had a feeling we might see Cowser on the bench tonight with Kjerstad getting a start in LF.
    • If Mayo comes up, Urias is still here. Hays and Mayo here.  McKenna and Kjerstad down.   If Mayo is unplayable at 3B because of defense but he’s raking, he either goes down or gets worked into the RF/DH mix.   If he doesn’t hit but the fielding is adequate he gets a long leash unless it’s Holliday epically bad.      Lastly, if Mayo is great on both sides of the ball here are some options with Holliday.   He can replace Urias as a backup at 3B and 2B or he can put up numbers at Norfolk. Longterm.  Experiment with Holliday in CF.  He’s got the speed for it and a better arm than Cedric.  If he takes to it, he could replace Mullins as soon as next year.  You could attempt the same thing with Westburg.  Or you could put Holliday at 2B and make Westburg an everyday backup who plays all over.   Or you could trade one of them. I would lean towards the CF experiment for Holliday.   Kills two birds with one stone.
    • Should have? Unless you're saying everyone should reach their ceiling even if they have injuries, I don't think your word choice is correct.  Now Nick is different than Tiger. As Drungo pointed out, he basically treaded water after a great start to his career. I can see you thinking he should have had a better career than he did. I actually think that's probably correct, though I assume it's pure speculation on why he didn't in fact have that career.
    • Yes! 200 mill payroll sure would make my $12  Mic Ultra taste better
    • First, Kids 2 and under are free no matter what.   Second, Kids 9 and under are free - you just have to get tickets in certain sections with a paid adult ticket.  Usually, they run about $17 per ticket.  So, a family of 4 going to the game would be $34.00.  Thats not that bad at all. The Orioles also do a lot of ticketing strategies / plans to make it affordable IF you do plan on attending 4+ games in a season.  Sometimes you just have to do it before the season starts. What I don't like - is that every year the concessions cost more $$$, the portions get smaller, and the parking fee's increase.  I remember back in 2014/2017 you could go get a pretzel for $5.00.  It was decent size and now of course - its like $7.50 and they changed the shape to a small "O"....  All of that is getting out of control.
