First half 2017 - 5.85 ERA, 1.76 WHIP

Second half 2017 - 3.09 ERA, 1.21 WHIP

1st Half 2016 - 4.15 ERA, 1.30 WHIP

2nd Half 2016 - 3.10 ERA, 1.26 WHIP

I wonder if the six man rotation has something to do with it.

Maybe, but I don't think so.   He wasn't on a six man rotation last year at any time.    Really the question isn't why he was so good in the second half.    The issue is why he was so bad in the first half.       I'm hoping the pattern doesn't repeat in 2018.

Gausman has a lot more experience than McDonald had before Sutcliffe arrived, but he still feels like an unharnessed talent just like Ben always did.

I feel like going into this offseason there's parallels of:

McDonald : Gausman

Mussina : Bundy

Sutcliffe : ???

We're going to be shopping for a couple starters, and I'm guessing with Tillman a question mark that resume/experience will weigh more into our preferences than some would hope.

Down in DC, I feel like part of why they bought Scherzer even though they had lots of pitching was to try and save Strasburg's soul, and it has worked.

Skimming the FA's, the Sutcliffe-iest name I see is John Lackey.

Expectations.  He's afraid of them, I think.  His struggles are largely mental.  And of course, a third pitch he can consistently throw for a strike would be nice ;).  I personally think what we're seeing, is what we're gonna get though.  One of the most gifted arms in all of baseball, but a guy that seems to get in his own way mentally.

I agree some of his issues seem psychological.     Sometimes guys get over that stuff with more experience and maturity, and sometimes they don't.    I don't really have any educated guesses as to which way Gausman will go.   But I don't think we have much choice but to hang on and hope for the best.

Oh I 100% agree with that.  We are in no place to give up on him.  Unless we somehow could acquire a top 50, close to ML ready pitching prospect and a back of the rotation guy ML pitcher, obviously.  But that literally would never happen, so yea, he ours for better or worse.  Here's hoping for better!

I was so hoping he would end the season on a strong note. Now, I'll be in "trade Gausman" mode all winter. :ohlord:

Classic, cliched, scripted answer #27 to the rescue:

"But, but, but that would be selling low.  Better to wait and hope he has a better first half next year so we can unload him on some unsuspecting GM."

You know, baseball GMs aren't dumb.

What is wrong with this guy. Seriously.

He seems to have had a lot of trouble limiting the damage on the days that he didn't have his A game this year.   18 starts allowing 2 ER or less; 11 starts allowing 5 ER or more, including 8 in which he was knocked out of the game in 4 innings or less.    He really needs to find a way to battle when he's not fully on his game.

Last year, he had 17 starts of 2 ER or less, but only 4 starts of 5 ER or more, and he pitched 4 or fewer innings only three times.

I'm glad Gausman was able to end his season on an up note, even though the offense gave him no support.   Better to end his season on this start than the last one.

O's hitters swinging like they can't wait to get on the plane and go home.

    • At least Turner, Realmuto & Marsh are all out. Not that they've missed them much.
    • Yeah Mayo is probably the next difference maker in terms of RHB.
    • Whether they have hit recently or not I don't know what else we would expect against a LHP. It kinda sucks that Mateo-Urias and Cowser-Mullins-Stowers are samehanded. If we wanted another RHB in the lineup you could put Mateo in center and then start Urias but I'm guessing he would not be a difference maker for you.
    • CoC made no assertion of any of that, so just stop. Here is his post in the 'Cal thinks Holiday moved to fast through the system', which was a response to me saying Holiday needed to physically mature some. CoC - 'At 6 feet and 195 pounds, Holliday’s maximum lift on the bench press has jumped to 315 pounds. He can squat 455 pounds, deadlift 500 pounds and box jump 55 inches — more than 4 1/2 feet.' He got that from this article, which he linked: https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/02/20/orioles-jackson-holliday-offseason-training-program/ Here is the thread, my post and CoC's are on the first page.
    • He looks at every lineup like that. He's been amazing.
    • Again, I never said that.  Quite the opposite.  Being too muscle bound can slow down a swing and running, plus make it harder to throw etc.  I think JH is fine as far as his build.  He will grow into his man body soon enough but in no way do I think JH should get muscle bound nor do I think you need to be to play baseball. Can of Corn implied that by talking about JH's huge, and again wrong, lifting numbers.....I did not.
    • I wouldn't trade Hollidy, Mayo, or Basallo for Crochet, but would definitely try to come up with a package around Kjerstad.  There is no doubt that Crochet is one of the top 10 arms in mlb, IMO, and  trading him is just a WS kind of thing to do.  Crochet could be that dominant arm out of the pen the O's need this year, and next year, the O's big 3 would be Bradish, Crochet and Gray Rod.  Maybe something like Kjerstad, Povich, some prospect in 20-25 range.  Crochet has probably been the best starter in the majors since some bad starts in early April.  ERA in low 1's since then.
