Orioles Acquire Miguel Castro Designate Gunkel

Looking at his minor league track record, he looks like a guy with a fair bit of upside -- more than a strikeout per inning, low H/9, reasonable BB rate.    It looks like the Rockies rushed him and/or he's yet one more pitcher who couldn't succeed pitching at altitude.     Buck made some interesting comments about our player development system: "our instructors down there are the best in baseball..."  http://www.masnsports.com/school-of-roch/2017/04/orioles-acquire-miguel-castro-from-rockies-and-dfa-joe-gunkel.html

Brian Graham made a similar claim at Fanfest.

Odd that a team like the Reds wouldn't have jumped on him first.  Of course I can't speak for the state of their 40 man roster but they certainly have need.

We traded a PTBNL or cash, so we didn't just claim him for nothing.    Doesn't that mean he didn't go through waivers?   In any event, maybe our scouts liked him better than the Reds'.

While I don't know figures I have always thought these transactions are for very little money in the scale of what teams spend.

Correct. He did not. It was not a claim. It was a trade.

Probably true when a guy has to come off the team's 40-man and is likely to be claimed by another team.    My only point was if the O's offered cash, the Reds didn't get a chance to put in a waiver claim ahead of the Orioles because he was never placed on waivers.    Of course, they could have chosen to offer more money than whatever the Orioles offered.

I wonder how these types of things go down. Did Dan notice this guy and go to Colorado? Were they on the verge of taking him off their roster and called up Dan?

I was thinking the other day after the last guy that teams must call up Dan before they do anything else because they know he loves to make these kinds of deals.

Castro is currently on his third option year.   He can go up and down has much as they want this year.  However he has to make the O's next spring or be put through waivers.

And if he doesn't, we put him on waivers, no harm, no foul, nothing much lost. If Dan only hits on one out of a dozen of these type of signings, it still makes a big difference.
