Jim Palmer just threw Chris Davis under the bus

It's a shame that Palmer's comments basically shamed him into trying something different, and even more of a shame that he's only doing it as a "Fine, FY" type of gesture, IMO.  I doubt it sticks.

It will stick if he makes an adjustment and starts hitting .290 and hits 13 HRs in a month.

His OPS is .490. Bunting won't fix that. He can't see the ball anymore. And he is a a lanky young man.

Wow.  That was even more pointed than his words last night, IMO.  He flat out said he's not working hard enough to get better.  Wow.  He inferred it last night, but there it is in plain English.

I like it.

I took a look at some video between 2013 and 2017.

In 2013, he starts his swing immediately after he plants his leg from his leg kick.  In 2017, he has a little bit of a hitch after planting his leg before he starts his swing.  It's pretty subtle, but given that milliseconds matter when hitting a baseball, it seems like it could be a pretty good reason why he cannot get around on a fastball anymore.  I have a suspicion he introduced that hitch so the ball travels more when the barrel is in the hitting zone, so he doesn't pull so many balls into the shift, and so he doesn't end up early on breaking and offspeed pitches.  Assuming he still has the ability to do so, he needs to get back to his 2013 timing and forget about hitting offspeed and/or hitting against the shift.

You can see the same hitch in 2018 as well:

I haven't broken out the stopwatch, but his time from first bat head movement to bat in the hitting zone seems to be pretty much the same as before.

Nothing changes the fact that Davis is hitting, like, .154.  BTW, what Davis is doing this year is like, Mario Mendoza career averages.

So we can talk about who worked with who and when, Palmer and what was said last night, Davis' hurt feelings and on and on, but it's not going to get any better, anytime soon.

I feel bad for the guy.  It's gotta suck to be this bad at your job.

When I begin to feel bad for him, even for a moment, I remind myself...as of today, Chris has made 78,575,226 dollars thus far playing this game.   AND long after he is sitting somewhere drinking margaritas....in 2037...he will get his last Orioles deferred payment and will by then have collected a grand total of 188,635,226 dollars.

After that, I don’t feel bad for Chris anymore.    We all could probably put up with quite a bit of aggravation at work for that return.

Nah, no one likes to suck at their job no matter how much they're being paid.  No one likes to be an embarrassment.

I don't know about suck but I have known plenty of folks that show no pride in their work.  They would rather shrug and walk away than do anything over the bare minimum.

    • The Padres probably should have kept to this thought of not trading some guys.  That trade for Soto could turn out to be one of the worst trades in history.  Makenzie Gore looking like top of rotation pitcher, CJ Abram’s looking like future multiple all star type player, James Wood could be one of best players in game in couple years, Robert Hassell another very talented prospect. Jarlin Sousa young flamethrower but has struggled in lower minors at 20.   That trade changed their entire franchise along with Nationals as well. The friars did move Soto for a decent package to Yankees but not nearly the upside and talent.
    • Yeah, your thought process is so complex I can’t follow.  And with all the excitement you’ve started with this topic I’m over the moon!
    • I find this news pretty shocking, given our board "consensus" about the lack of pitching. Thx for the heads up. Granted, all those SP are still at high A or below, and the RP are only rated 35 or less FV, but given the impressive quantity of arms, some should pop above that in time.
    • I have never had any problem with Scott Boras.   We’ll see how he does with Rubenstein and Elias, but it’s not his job to facilitate dynasty-building by the Orioles.  His job is to get the best deal for his clients, considering the clients’ objectives.
    • ...and yet when everyone was clamoring for a trade for a #1 and we acquired Burnes, when no one was really expecting THAT, we had a staff lined up - that if it had been and remained healthy - was a top SP staff in the league.  I'm not sure how one comes to the conclusion that they need to explain something.  They, indeed, had depth enough in the farm and from acquisitions - both in waivers and FA's - to consider a 6 man rotation - a luxury. For me, their error is not in picking, identifying, or developing pitchers - it is in the area of realistic expectations in rehab or recovery in pitchers.  We banked a lot on pitchers a lot of us were surprised such a big role was being expected of them.
    • I’d trade anyone for the right return (except Gunnar, Adley, Burnes).   However, it’s more likely than not that there won’t be a deal that works with Holliday, Mayo, or Basallo because at that point whoever we’re trading for (Logan Gilbert, Logan Webb, even Skubal) will be of such quality that they will be considered in the “untouchable” category from the other side and we’d likely need to overpay.  I think it’s more likely that we trade Kjerstad or Cowser but even then it needs to be the right deal.  If such a deal isn’t available, Elias can likely get someone like Scherzer, Fedde, Quintana, Severino, Gray, Blackburn, etc. for a package without a top 100 guy. Regardless of the top end deals, we should trade Norby, Stowers, and Urias for whatever we can get (at least relief help) as they don’t have spots and their value will only go down.
