I am not even upset.  Marlins outsmarted the Orioles.  All we can hope for is new GM is smarter and had authority the club.

Outsmarted?  As much as I think it sucks that the Orioles apparently won't get the Mesa brothers, that was the result of a hugely sub-optimal play by the Marlins to accumulate extra bonus pool money.  I honestly don't see how giving up that many prospects for the right to pay the Mesa brothers helps their overall bottom line.  If the Orioles gave up half their AA roster to acquire the extra bonus pool money, I would probably be livid.  Furthermore, it remains to be seen whether the Orioles will whiff on all three. I'm new to economics and finance, but I do believe that there would be more overall money available to them if they allowed the players to sign with 2 different teams.  I would have to believe that there is an under-the-table agreement between this buscon and the Marlins if they managed to snag all three, and I would call on MLB to investigate.  (Not that they'd listen, Manfred hates the O's.)

That was sort of stupid, right?

This is a joke. We gave up that amount of money to a guy who the Phillies may have cut. And this comes at a time when we are pursuing a couple of guys. I just don't understand it. It is almost like DD this on his way out just to screw Angelos.

I am guessing you haven't a clue as to whom the Marlins have given up.  The last two guys traded where a 17 and 19 year old playing in the Domincan.  They gave up a guy who struggled in high A at age 22

In the biggest haul of money they traded a reliever who is up for arbitration next year whom they probably didn't want to pay anyway.  The guy was sub-replacement level this year.

Really if you are going to make a post like you just did you could spend the time to actually see what the Marlins traded. Otherwise you are just wasting everyone's time reading your post.

Which destroys everyone's theory about how much these guys want to play in Miami over Baltimore.

It does.

Maybe even a 3rd thing here.

The guys dont want to play for either and want to play for a contender and they are stalling, trying to get another buyer into the market.

IMO

The guys have an agent that is stalling to get them the most money possible.

Their agent has been brilliant playing the team that almost has to win to save face(Orioles) against the team with new ownership who needs to make a move to make up for gutting their MLB squad(MIA). I can't believe Mesa is going to end up getting  top 5 draft pick money. That's pretty crazy.

Im aware that they probably aren't anything special.  But warm bodies have value too, and they paid that price for the right to spend a lot of money, and the promise that it will be enough to get the Mesa brothers/Gaston to sign a contract.  And the younger ones they traded could conceivably turn into prospects.  That said, maybe the Marlins have some guarantees in place with the buscon, I don't know.  That would make sense.

As a general comment, I think it's really hard to place a value on IFA allotments, because you have no idea what you'll end up with at the end of the day.  Maybe you end up with VVM.  Maybe you end up with egg on your face.  Imagine if VVM signs with the Orioles and the Marlins get no one.  How would the Marlins look then?  Not that it's likely, but it illustrates the difficulty in valuing the slot money.

One of the guys is 16 and another is 17.  If the make the majors one day it is in the distant future. By that time the Orioles and Marlins might be contenders.

It is weird how this going on so long.  If these guys were being hyped as superstars of the future it would be frustrating.  Instead is just perplexing.

Why should the players be in a hurry?    They can take their sweet time and let the teams trade for as much slot money as they’re allowed to get and then play one off against the other.    It’s in their interest to be patient.

    • I'm not sure Kelly has a ton of value. His defensive metrics are declining. His ZIPs projections for 2025 is 301 PA, .226/.306/.365 for 8 HR and 13 2Bs. Why not just keep McCann? Tyler O'Neill I can get behind. That would be a solid pickup. I would hope they can do better than Pivetta. I agree with you that Snell makes much more sense if you want to win. With Jeff Hoffman, are you paying for the last two years in Philly? Because before that he was not good. With relievers being as volatile as they are, what's the contract look like. I'd be worried about paying for 2023-2024 level performance and getting the pitcher you saw in Cincinnati in 2021-2022.   So give me McCann, O'Neill and Snell. Do what the O's do and find a cheap and effective BP arm or two off the scrap heap.  I'd be good.
    • This wouldn’t be an Angelos offseason as it would be multiple multi year commitments where the players are making 8 figures. And yes, Elias isn’t a GM likely to go nuts in FA because he knows it’s largely foolish to do so.
    • That offseason would stink, to be quite honest. And Rubenstein should be rightfully criticized if that's all it was. The O's roster would be an 84-85 win club if that's all they did.  Jeff Hoffman would be a great pickup. Nick Pivetta is a middle/back of the rotation guy and would be a big step back from Burnes.  Carson Kelly is a backup C and a lateral move to McCann. Tyler O'Neill would be a fine replacement for Santander.  They need more. A Eflin, Grayson, Pivetta, Kremer, Povich/Suarez/Rogers/McDermott rotation just isn't good enough. That's also not enough depth. You simply can't count on Rogers and his 88-89 mph fastball, nor can you count on Suarez to repeat (although he'd be a fine bullpen/depth arm as a starter).  This bullpen, even adding Hoffman, is still a liability waiting to happen.  This club needs 2 bullpen arms, 2 starters, a backup C, and at least 1 OF/DH type as well as some sort of investment in the young core by way of contract extensions. I'm sick of hearing "well it takes 2 to tango". That's balderdash. If the Royals can do it, the O's can do it.
    • Unless there are extensions this would not be a good offseason for new ownership. Just screams Angelos approach, IMO which means Elias is more than problem. Take risks for once
    • The Marlins lost Alcantara, Perez for the entire season, Luzardo/Garrett/Cabrera had multiple injuries. It's easy to believe things are coincidental but when you look at what so many of their key players were going through and how others had to step up, it makes a lot more sense. Most of them are also young, too.
    • I like this approach. So yes, I'd be satisfied. I am not  big splash or bust. This approach or similar makes a lot of sense to me. We have the potential. This supports and enhances that potential IMO.
    • I'd be a bit disappointed.  I'd be fine with Kelly, Hoffman and O'Neil, I actually like those 3 moves, depending on length of contracts and the like.  But if Pivetta is our big SP add, I'd feel they didn't do enough.  I'm not against Pivetta being signed as a PART of the SP upgrades maybe, but don't want him to the the headliner.  If we don't end up with a Burnes/Snell/Fried I'm going to be a bit disappointed.   That said, there are a few other moves I'd like to see.  I'm more than ready to move on from the Mountcastle/O'Hearn platoon at 1st base, and would like to see us sign a full time first baseman like Walker.  Sure, in a perfect world we could put Mayo there, but from what we saw last year I'm not sold that he can do it.  I know it was a SSS, but still.   If that was our offseason, it makes us a better team, so that's a good thing.  But I'd be a bit unhappy and would feel like they didn't do quite enough to improve the team.
