A Few Questions About Some Former Orioles

I’m curious where some of these people will end up, since I really haven’t seen much  in the way of news about any of them. Give me your best guess.

Buck Showalter: Will he land a new managerial job for 2019? There’s several vacancies but I haven’t seen him mentioned... Would he accept a lower coaching position? Is he done?

Adam Jones: This has been much discussed here, but hardly mentioned by the national media outlets. If he’s not coming back here, where will he end up? Will he be an everyday starter?

Ryan Flaherty: After a roaring start with the Braves this year, he cooled off significantly. He is reportedly still trying to play. He’s 32. Where do you see him ending up? Any chance he’d return to Bmore on a 1 year deal? If the price is right, we could use some stopgaps in the infield. (Notably, he’s also been mentioned as someone who could coach in the future. He’s well liked, knowledgeable, and fluent in Spanish)

Buck - won't be a manager anywhere in 2019.

Jones - I don't think there'll be much of a market for Jones. Goes to San Diego or somewhere.

Flaherty - good guy, but I can't say I care where he ends up.

I thnk Buck retires to a part time gig somewhere, and by his choosing.

I dont see much of a market for Adam, and it wont not surprise me to see him retire out.

Ryan, might make a roster somewhere as a cheap and capable utility infielder, heck, he could even come back here, since they need 25 players and most spots are sitting open with question marks. Yes, I know, bring in the youngsters and throw them to the wind, but there are only so many of them.

Jones isn't going to retire at 33.

Did you see the part about not much of a market.

I dont see him getting a multi-year deal for decent money.

I dont see him really to pay for league veteran minimum.

With that said, if he doesnt have a contract, that is pretty much retirement.

I think he plays in Japan before he retires at 33.

You point being?

I never said he had to keep working.

You know what my point was, its not like you are stupid or this is your first rodeo.

most guys dont willingly goto Japan and play ball, unless they desperately love the game and need the money and cant find a US job playing ball.

So let me get this straight. You all have been suggesting that the Orioles bring back  Nick Markakis for the last four years...and now you're suggesting the bring back JJ Hardy as a player coach...BUT you don't think Adam Jones can land a MLB deal somewhere/anywhere (i.e., he might play in Japan). It's like you have blind homer amnesia today!

Cleveland was rumored as a landing spot when the trade rumors were swirling and I believe Brantley is a free agent this year. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up signing with the Indians for a modest two year deal (and yes, he's going to get more than the MLB minimum).

    • It all depends on the price, they are going to want multiple top 50 prospects but I’m not sure they get that. I think they’ll get offers of 1 top 50 plus other pieces around top 100. We can’t know what the White Sox will do, but it’s similar to Cease - hard for his value to go up while his service time goes down + risk of injury. For the Orioles it’s pretty easy, Kjerstad is the only top 50 prospect that should be on the table. If the White Sox won’t trade him without getting one of Holliday/Mayo/Basallo then it’s an easy no. But if it’s Kjerstad + lesser prospects, then I’m listening.
    • He has a huge reason: risk. The $400M is not guaranteed. Setting aside performance, he is one big injury away from ending up with zero. So far he has locked in about $4M with zero dollars guaranteed beyond that. Grady Sizemore was Gunnar-level through Age 26 and ended up with only $30M.
    • Agreed this is the best lineup the Orioles have had in the last 40 years. And that is without any contribution from Holliday, Mayo and Kjerstad.  Just pinch myself daily at all of the position player talent in this organization.   One ace starter and one who just needs to build on his current track record to be considered a second ace.  It just hurts to think what could have been if the elbows of Bradish and Bautista held up.  While none of us trust the bullpen the result have been decent to pretty good.  One or two high leverage relivers and this team is better than the Yankees (they may be even without that) and with better postseason luck should be favored to win the AL.
    • This is silly.    At any point, he could get hurt, have a down year, etc.. He is an Oriole for the next 4 years.  He will make around 50 million for the next 4 years. So, if you pay him 70ishM for 2 FA years, that is a 6/120 extension that is basically giving him all the money he will make the next 6 years.     After that, he gets opt outs for several years at big money and gets total security. It's actually a bad contract for the team as all the risk is on them. The only downside for Gunnar on this deal is if he stays completely healthy and his performance maintains at this level for 4 more years. If that happens, he probably loses 8-20 million (depending on where contracts go) for those 2 years and then he can still go get his 400M contract. So, he risks losing a little money for a ton of guaranteed money that gives him total protection against everything and he still goes into FA at an age where he can get the mega deal. Hes not turning that down
    • Which one you want pitching 5 innings for you?  Playoff games starter will typically go 5.  Maybe 6.
    • Hall (knee) will join Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday to resume his rehab assignment, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Hall experienced a setback with his sprained left knee during his second rehab appearance May 23. He's expected to eventually require a platelet-rich plasma injection or possibly surgery for the knee, but for now, he'll attempt to pitch through the injury. Given that he's been on the injured list since April 20 and hasn't made a rehab appearance in about three weeks, Hall will likely require multiple outings at Nashville to get fully stretched out before he's an option for the Milwaukee rotation.
    • He's on pace to land a guaranteed contract in the $400-500 million dollar range at like 27 years old and his agent is Scott freakin' Boras. Absolutely nothing about that screams "I am going to sell even a single free agent year." Will he listen to extension offers? Probably. Will he actually accept one? Probably not.
