My candidates for MiL player/pitcher of the month

Something wrong with Kjerstad's numbers. He finished April at:

.284 .392 .612

His OBP never got below .371 (May 3) on any day in May. However, his May line is:

.313 .364 .545

These are from Bowie site.

Maybe I'm reading something wrong but if you start May at .392 OBP and never get below .371 OBP on any day, you can't finish at .364 OBP. Same thing with SLG, started at .612 and was never below .580 any day in May, he can't get to .545 overnight

May 31 he was at:

.301 .376 .572

Those May numbers are solely for May, not cumulative.

For the position players, several players had strong months but there’s an obvious winner in June 2023.

Coby Mayo .340/.467/.711, 8 HR, 18 RBI

Fernando Peguero, .389/.458/.528, 0 HR, 12 RBI

Johnny Rhodes, .322/.410/.575, 3 HR, 13 RBI

Trendon Craig, .348/.418/.565, 2 HR, 11 RBI

Jud Fabian, .296/.396/.580, 6 HR, 18 RBI

Heston Kjerstad, .315/.396/.576, 5 HR, 10 RBI

Sammy Basallo, .309/.411/.543, 5 HR, 12 RBI

Colton Cowser, .322/.431/.509, 3 HR, 12 RBI

Billy Cook, .330/.375/.534, 4 HR, 13 RBI

@Roy Firestonewill be happy to know that Coby Mayo is my choice for MiL player of the month!

I’m very glad to see Johnny Rhodes joining the party.  His month was kind of under the radar because his overall numbers (.788 OPS as of today) haven’t been overly impressive.  Good to see him coming on strong.

For the pitchers, I’m disqualifying Grayson Rodriguez, since he’s lost prospect status.   But he had a very good month   Here are the lead candidates:

Daniel Lloyd, 24.0 IP, 2.25 ERA, 1.208 WHIP, 9.0 K/9, 3.4 K/BB

Luis De Leon, 23.2 IP, 1.54 ERA, 1.286 WHIP, 11.2 K/9, 2.2 K/BB

Trayce Bright, 22.2 IP, 2.86 ERA, 1.227 WHIP, 12.7 K/9, 2.2 K/BB

Jesús Palacios, 20.2 IP, 1.31 ERA, 0.919 WHIP, 7.8 K/9, 4.5 K/BB

Kyle Virbitsky, 19.2 IP, 0.92 ERA, 0.559 WHIP, 10.1 K/9, 3.7 K/BB

Alex Pham, 19.2 IP, 2.29 ERA, 0.763 WHIP, 12.8 K/9, 4.7 K/BB

I normally don’t like to give the pitcher award to guys under 20 IP, but Virbitsky just missed and his ERA and WHIP are just too good to ignore.  He’s my pitcher of the month.

July 2023 - Position Players

Once again,  there were many players who had outstanding months in July, with 12 players posting a .900+ OPS in at least 60 PA.  I'm going to limit my candidates to 5 players, and I think the winner is clear.

-Dylan Beavers, .397/.494/.691, 4 HR, 18 RBI

- Heston Kjerstad, .387/.454/.640, 3 HR, 12 RBI

- Silas Ardoin, .264/.451/.566, 4 HR, 5 RBI

- Samuel Basallo, .297/.444/.563, 3 HR, 11 RBI

-Jackson Holliday, .387/.457/.532m 1 HR, 4 RBI

Honorable mentions to Max Costes (1.079 OPS in 51 PA and an org-leading 6 HR), Kyle Stowers (1.028 OPS and 6 HR but part of that was in low-minors rehab), Coby Mayo (.880 OPS and an org-leading 20 RBI), and Connor Norby (.969 OPS and 19 RBI).  And, it should be noted that both Holliday and Mayo successfully navigated promotions to Bowie and Norfolk, respecively, with very little drop-off in performance, if any.

All that said, I think the award should go to Beavers, who led all July qualifiers in all three slash line categories.  He also was tied for 3rd in RBI and 5th in homers for the month.   So, Beavers is my choice.

July 2023 - Pitchers

Some good candidates here too, some of whom have been flying under the radar a bit.

- Moises Chace, 17. 0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.941 WHIP, 14.3 K/9, 3.9 K/BB

- Jared Beck, 15.0 IP, 0.60 ERA, 0.600 WHIP, 7.8 K/9, 1.9 K/BB

- Daniel Lloyd, 20.0 IP, 0.90 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 13.1 K/9, 5.8 K/BB

-Deivy Cruz, 18.0 IP, 1.00 ERA, 0.833 WHIP, 8.5 K/9, 4.3 K/BB

- Alex Pham, 20.0 IP, 1.80 ERA, 0.850 WHIP, 6.8 K/9, 2.5 K/BB

- Jesus Palacios, 19.0 IP, 1.89 ERA, 1.105 WHIP, 13.7 K/BB, 4.8 K/BB

This is a really close call, but it's hard to beat a 0.00 ERA for the month and top K/9 numbers as well.  So Chace, who entered July with a 6.14 ERA, is my choice.   Going into July, Chace had walked 44 batters in 44 innings; in July, only 7 in 17 innings.   That seems to be the key for him, as he yleids very few hits (6.2 per 9).

Its worth noting that Lloyd, Pham and Palacios all were on the short list for June, and Pham was pitcher of the month in May.   So, these guys all bear watching.

109 IP and pretty close to a 1.00 ERA.  Impressive accomplishment by this group of pitchers.

August 2023 -- Hitters

This was by far the weakest performance of the year by our best hitters, with nobody other than our recent draftees posting over a .920 OPS for a full season club.   My candidates for top hitter are (in OPS order):

Mac Horvath (FCL/ Delmarva), .306/.426/.612, 3 HR 8 RBI in 61 PA

Josh Liranzo (DSL), .340/.438/.585, 3 HR, 11 RBI in 64 PA

Matthew Etzel (FCL/Delmarva), .328/.447/.508, 2 HR, 18 RBI in 86 PA (also 16 SB)

Enrique Bradfield Jr. (FCL/Delmarva), .352/.544/.407, 0 HR, 4 RBI in 79 PA (also 19 SB)

Jackson Holliday (Bowie), .319/.422/.495, 2 HR, 13 RBI in 109 PA (tied for org lead in runs scored with 20)

Dylan Beavers (Bowie), .344/.446/.462, 0 HR, 4 RBI in 111 PA (tied for org lead in runs scored with 20)

John Rhodes (Bowie), .238/.344/.538, 7 HR, 19 RBI in 93 PA (led the org in homers and tied for 3rd in RBI)

Coby Mayo (Norfolk), .230/.370/.471, 5 HR, 20 RBI in 108 PA (tied for org led in RBI with 20)

Horvath, Etzel and Bradfield all posted ridiculous numbers in the FCL, and were sub-.900 in Delmarva, so I can't see picking one of them over Holliday, who was .900+ in AA while being 2 years younger than those three.  So for me, it comes down to the DSL youngster Liranzo, who only turned 17 the week after the season ended, vs. the 19-year old AA star Holliday.   It's a close call, but since Holliday already won the award once this season, I'd give it to Liranzo, who did post an OPS more than 100 points higher than Holliday, though in many fewer at bats and at a much lower level.   What he did at age 16 is quite impressive.

August 2023 - Pitchers

In ERA order, I think the candidates are:

Kyle Virbitsky (age 24, Aberdeen), 23.0 IP, 1.96 ERA, 1.087 WHIP, 7.4 K/9, 2.7 K/BB

Connor Gillispie (age 25, Bowie), 24.1 IP, 2.59 ERA, 1.151 WHIP, 5.9 K/9, 2.3 K/BB

Trace Bright (age 22, Aberdeen/Bowie), 20.1 IP, 2.66 ERA, 1.328 WHIP, 15.5 K/9, 2.9 K/BB

Daniel Lloyd (age 22, Aberdeen), 26.0 IP, 2.77 ERA, 1.077 WHIP, 8.0 K/9, 4.6 K/BB

Chayce McDermott (age 24, Norfolk), 25.2 IP, 2.81 ERA, 1.052 WHIP, 11.2 K/9, 3.2 K/BB

I think you could make the case for any of them, except maybe Gillispie.    But I like seeing success at the higher levels, so I would choose McDermott, who put up his numbers in his first full month of AAA.

March/April 2024

We’re back for another year!  And, while there were lots of strong performances last month, I think the winners are clear.

Hitters

It’s gotta be Heston Kjerstad: .349/.431/.744, 10 HR, 30 RBI in only 21 games before he got promoted to the majors.  Despite not playing the full month in the minors, he led the org in BA, SLG, OPS, runs, HR and RBI.

Honorable mentions:

Coby Mayo .330/.400/.652, 9 HR, 25 RBI

Jackson Holliday .321/.451/.554, 2 HR, 10 RBI

Kyle Stowers .257/.314/.596, 9 HR, 25 RBI

Connor Norby, .280/.353/.517, 7 HR, 22 RBI

Creed Willems, .299/.333/.642, 6 HR, 22 RBI

Matthew Etzel, .343/.422/.557, 3 HR, 12 RBI

TT Bowens, .312/.368/.541, 3 HR, 18 RBI

Jalen Vasquez, .306/.452/.453, 1 HR, 8 RBI

Dylan Beavers, .329/.415/.471, 2 HR, 9 RBI

That’s a lot of very strong performances.  And while I think it’s fair to say that in any normal month, Coby Mayo’s performance might easily have merited player of the month honors (he was 2nd to Kjerstad in OPS, HR and RBI), by the same token, he might have been beaten out by Jackson Holliday if Holliday hadn’t spent those two weeks in the majors.  As it was, Holliday scored 20 runs in only 13 games and was 2nd in the org in OBP, 3rd in OPS.

March/April 2024 Pitcher of the Month

Again, it's an easy choice: Cade Povich, who threw 26.1 innings to a 1.03 ERA, 0.759 WHIP, 13.7 K/9, 4.0 K/BB.  He was almost unhittable, at 3.4 H/9.  And, he did it at the highest level of the minors, while throwing the second-most innings of any pitcher in the org.

The top runner up is also pretty clear: Cameron Weston, who threw 16.2 innings to an 0.54 ERA, 0.840 WHIP, 10.3 K/9, 2.7 K/BB.  He allowed only 3.8 H/9, and that performance won him an early promotion to Bowie.

Other notables:

Moises Chace, 15.0 IP, 1.20 ERA, 1.133 WHIP, 13.2 K/9, 2.0 K/BB

Luis De Leon, 16.1 IP, 1.65 ERA, 0.867 WHIP, 12.7 K/9, 4.6 K/BB

I'm going to cut it off there, but there were many other good performances in March/April.

    • The Fangraph rankings didn't have Liranzo and Almeyda either so are you using them as your "bible"? I mean, I'm not knocking them, but they are clearly going of draft status on some of these guys and not having Etzel on here when he's totally outplayed everyone else, including Bradfield, in his draft class so far is head scratcher. I'm not ready to say Etzel is a better prospect than Bradfield yet, but it's not out o the question. I think Bradfield has been working on a new approach and swing this year and that's why the production has been slow to come.  I still have high hopes for Bradfield and he's still an impact defensive outfielder.
    • That’s the crazy part - no matter how you stack it, you’ll end up with a comically overqualified #9 hitter vs RHP. The worst hitters in this lineup vs. RHP this year have been Mountcastle and Adley. We’re arguably already overdue for Westburg swapping spots with Mountcastle. Mountcastle, Westburg and Mayo would get spaced out and likely have a righty batting 9th, although I suppose it could be Cowser or Kjerstad batting 9th instead - which is still wild going up against a RHP.
    • I'd like to point out that Mayo has made one error since May 11th at 3B and has 2 errors in his 25 games at 3B.
    • I have no confidence in Cano in these situations.
    • I don’t know how much it is from not trusting Kimbrel, or him only being comfortable coming in a clean inning because he’s been doing it his whole career, or just not wanting to push him too much regular season. But a big factor just from an effectiveness point of view is that Kimbrel is prone to throw a ton of pitches. Feels a lot less reliable that he can get 4 outs before running out of gas and his effectiveness falling off. Kimbrel’s age and earlier season minor injury woes, and apparent large benefit from more rest are also distinguishing factors. Bautista also throws a lot of pitches of course, but he’s so unhittable it hardly seems to matter.  But he also blew out his arm while carrying a very high workload and a lot of multi-inning regular season appearances, so it could also simply be that the Orioles are recalibrating toward not wanting to risk their best RP that way in the regular season, especially with all the other considerations.
    • This is the lineup I want to see more times than not. I still think Mullins should play 4-5 times a week though so a rotation of Mullins, Santander, Cowser, and Kjerstad would give everyone enough playing time and keep them fresh.  Although I think Mayo would move up in the order very quickly.
    • Yes possibly, 3 months ago he had ROY potential, hows that look now. I'm a big a homer as anybody but pump the brakes a little.
