What if this is the next O's contending team?

Of course it’s way too soon. Just having a little fun. Like I said in 2 weeks we may be under .500 and headed towards 40 losses.

You said:  "I can’t believe I am asking this but at what point would we consider them a contender?"  And I'm trying to tell you - It's too soon to ask that question.  If you don't want to hear that answer, don't ask the question.

So...In the words of Lou Brown, maybe we can "hang around for a while and see if we can give 'em all a nice big $#*%burger to eat!"

This does have a Major League flavor - what will the front office come up with next to lose enough to get to Kumar, er, Florida?

Especially with the Marlins head to head at hand, Bleier a deft little opening move.

Not quite sure what the issue is.

I said how many games in if they are still playing well can we can look at it as being real.

Heaven forbid someone try to find a little positive in this world.

Lol, I think there's a disconnect there.  :S

Sounds like you are in denial.    Bleier was a   below 2.00 ERA pitcher in the majors for 2016-2018.  Look it up.   He had a lat and shoulder injuries be begin 2019 and was never really healthy.   This season he is back to his  2016-2018 form.

Do you honestly think Bleier was ever as good as, say, 2012-15 Darren O’Day?   I don’t.   I think Buck spotted him well and he had good fortune.    I don’t mean to say he wasn’t a solid pitcher, but I would not judge him on his ERA alone.   Nor am I ready to declare him back to his 2016-18 form based on the three innings he pitched this year.    I stick with what I said before: 5th or 6th best option in a good bullpen.

I never said Bleier was as good as O'Day.  O'Day would come in with runners on base and no one out and not allow a run.  He was excellent.  And O'Day had strikeout stuff.   Bleier pitched to contact.   He could pitch two or three innings and pitch very well but would not come in the situations that O'Day did.

However Bleier was very consistent when healthy and pitched to just below a 2,00 ERA.   There are not many pitchers that did better than he did during that period.  He would take a lockdown, strikeout pitcher to be better.

He certainly looks like he is back to his old form at this point.

It's 3 innings in 2 games.

Last June he had a stretch where he allowed 1 run in 6.1 innings. One might have said that he certainly looked like he was back to his old form at that point. Then he had a 4.58 ERA the rest of the year.

Then in August he had a 2 game period with 2.2 innings, no runs, 1 hit, 4 Ks. Back to his old form right? But then he had a 4.60 ERA the rest of the way.

Bleier was clearly dealing with injuries last season.  He appears healthy now.  When healthy he has pitched well since joining the O's.

In my rat's ass of an opinion, it will take between 30 and 35 games to be able to assess whether or not this team is a contender ........ if the Orioles are at least 2 or 3 games over .500 at that point in the season, then I would consider them to be a bona-fide contender, but with an asterisk ........ a contender for this season only, with contender status for 2021 and beyond still to be determined.

  • 2 weeks later...

20% through the season. Two weeks ago the consensus was that the 2020 O's were not a contending team.  Not enough talent to contend.  Read what you posted.    Has your opinion changed?

20 games - 33% through the season.  As of right now they're in the playoffs so, they're contending for something.

    • You mean like spank the yankees a couple times this week??
    • I notice Coby Mayo listed as a RF.
    • Astros admit it is a knee sprain for Yordan and he is out the Mariners series, with hoped for return at the Guardians Friday. He will play the playoffs and I guess benefit from that infielders on the dirt rule, as otherwise defenses might have been able to put all of them well on to the grass like Pujols at the end. Mariners got the must opener with "just" Bryce Miller - now they have Logan Gilbert and George Kirby tonight and tomorrow afternoon against Yordan-free lineups to try and make the weekend interesting.
    • I think a lot of fans frustration (well, at least mine) comes from a combination of this specific team and history.  This 2024 team has been extremely frustrating.  It is factually true that in the last 106 games they have only one walk-off win and only two wins when trailing after 6 innings. They have no series wins against an over .500 team since July 4th, and the worst record in the AL East since June 20. They cannot put together any long winning streaks, they have a real hard time generating a "big" inning, their all-star catcher has had an extremely disappointing second half, and their prized rookies have been far worse than anyone could have imagined.  So this has been without question a three-month plus malaise that feels like it just won't end.  Every time we want to feel enthusiastic or excited, we get shut down by a punch in the gut like Saturday and Sunday. The injuries have undoubtedly played a role, but I don't buy that they should have played this much of a role. Especially not on offense. The history part of it does not relate to the current team, but is a real pain point for fans like me who have been around for decades.  This organization last won an LCS game on October 13, 1997.  Almost 27 years since their last single game win in the LCS. Think about that and how much life has passed since that time.  Over those 27 years, 22 different fanbases have experienced their team in the World Series at least once.  If we go back to the last time the Orioles won the pennant, we can add another 4 fanbases to the list of World Series participants.  I think a 3 game sweep in last year's playoffs hurts us far more than it would Red Sox fans or Cardinals fans or Dodgers fans who are there regularly.  We have far fewer bites at the apple than most other fans, and every opportunity lost just resonates that much more.   No one should ever think the Orioles fans are spoiled, regardless of how much we may complain.  We are among the least spoiled fanbases not only in baseball, but in all of professional sports.
    • Wowww. 4 years in a row, that is damn impressive.
    • He's absolutely right, but of course, anything prior to the 2023 sweep means nothing to this current squad.  Last year we got a glimpse into this team with pressure. We all, including me, pointed towards their inexperience, but now we have a 2nd half of a season with mostly the same players wilting under pressure. Whether that pressure be because of the game situation, expectations, trying to do too much with other players out, or whatever, we have another data point of this current team struggling when it matters. Now, barring a complete a total collapse by the Orioles over the last two series of the year (not out of the question but the that the Royals and Twins are crashing too make it almost assured this team will back into the playoffs), this team is going to the playoffs. This will be the real test because gone are the excuses of injury with Westburg, Urias, Coulombe and Webb back and the team will most likely face another struggling wild card team. That should give some hope that this team will win at least a game, and maybe a series if things go right.  Crazier things have happened before in the playoffs, but only a miracle World Series appearance would be able to overcome this frustrating season and end the discussion over the lack of clutch of this core group of players.
