I’m not sure there are any hard/fast rules about hits and errors, but if it bounces of the glove I’m usually gonna call it an E.

and if I’m Hyde, I had another reliever warming before the first pitch of the inning, on the grounds that Phillips isn’t going to come in for a second inning anyway.

We just don't have enough pitchers available today to play those games.   Phillips was going to pitch to that mostly righty section of the lineup no matter what.   Now Bruce is due and Fry will be in.   You put guys in to do a job and they either do it or fail.

And today he did it. I can be forgiven for being nervous before and relieved after.

Yep, they gotta cover 13 innings tomorrow and the bullpen pitched extensively in the first two games of this series.

He went all out using his best relievers two nights in a row to win the series.

So today was always going to be icing on the cake.   If we won it was going to have to be with Eshelman and 2nd tier relievers.   I was nervous going in, but at least I could be happy in the knowledge we'd already won the series.

And hey, we have 3 more innings for one of the top 5 offenses in baseball to face the worst bullpen in baseball...no reason we don't add a few more runs here.

The only saving grace here is there are only about 43 games left in the season. I say "about" because we're part-way through this one and we have to play 3 innings of one tomorrow, so I counted each as ".5" and rounded.

With that few games left, stretching out the pen some is much more manageable. Especially if they're good and take care of their own business. It's incredible how bad the Phils' pen is. These 43 games will feel like 143 to them! :P

Thanks for the info. I thought it was all about the Orioles refusing to allow him to use the cutters so that is incorrect?

Yes. It was a story that got passed around and around. The Orioles were not a pro cutter team at that time because it has been proven that throwing it takes away velocity of the 4 seam fastball. But some pitchers are great because of their cutter and they obviously would not thrive in an organization that was not in favor of it's top pitching prospects throwing it.

Right, but this is game 3 in a stretch of 13.444 games in 13 days. Going to have to dip into the minors for relievers and/or play Hess or Akin in a close game at some point.

They let Bundy throw it when he got to the majors.  Didn't Hunter have a trash one?
