Another gem from Hammell. 7IP 3H 0ER 2BB 7K. His ERA for the season is now 2.02 and his WHIP is .69.

I was really hoping in the off season they would extend an offer to him. I broached the subject a couple times in the off season but it didn't get much traction. He wasn't healthy last year and I thought he would at least be closer to what we saw in 2012 without having us stuck with a long term commitment.

He signed for $6 million. That's looking like quite the bargain compared to Ubaldo.

Sure looks like a great move now but I guarantee that 90% of OH would have been outraged if that was THE move for a starter this offseason. You throw enough stuff against the wall and something will stick. The questions is why was Hammel so bad last year and back to 2012 form this year? If the knee was still bothering him last year, the O's should have taken that into consideration.

Like I said, when I brought it up I was usually met with just the response you're talking about. I don't think he was ever comfortable last year with the knee and who knows why they didn't take it into consideration. Curious, too, because he was a deal that Dan pulled the trigger on initially.

I sometimes feel like Dan is the cut bait and run guy. Not that it's a bad thing, but it could be if a guy like Hammel who I consider a competitor and isn't seriously damaged can be effective isn't given the proper consideration. Maybe they didn't like the outlook for even short term medical success. Maybe it wasn't in Dan's hands.

We all know what happens to medical decisions around here.

In 2012, Jason Hammel was 4-1 in his first six starts for the O's with a 2.11 ERA. From that point onward (i.e., including 12 starts before he got hurt) he was 4-5 with a 4.08 ERA.

He was lousy last year, and not very good for most of his career apart from a chunk of a respectable 2012.

Much like Ubaldo, Hammel's following a not-entirely-surprising trajectory thus far. If he keeps throwing gems, it's inarguable that the Cubs will have found themselves a bargain...but I'd be shocked if that turned out to be the case, and no one would have been able to predict such season from Hammel.

Bud Norris had a bad outing too.

He pitched 24 innings with 17 ks and 6 walks in the majors.

I have been critical of the Norris trade at times, but I have been impressed with his efforts thus far other than the one start. It's a long season so we will see how he holds up.

just turned 20 in High A ball.

Bud Norris had a bad outing too.

He pitched 24 innings with 17 ks and 6 walks in the majors.

I hated to give up Hader, and I am glad to see he is doing well in A+ ball. I note that they are being very careful with his innings.

So far Bud has been better than I thought he would be, LJ Hoes is off to a horrible start, Hader looks special but has a long way to go... and of course their is the first round pick.

Don't think it will ever go down as a win for the O's.... but it will take several years to play out.

We gave up our first round pick? I thought it was some other type of pick? Can someone correct me?

Compensatory first round pick... like a 1A, picks between first and second round... I think it's the 35th player drafted.

Of course we did give up our first round for Ubaldo, and our second round for Cruz... so we won't be getting much in this year's draft.

      You said Ortiz was in the range of Basallo. That’s completely laughable.  They aren’t even close.    Bradfield has been in the range of Ortiz, as some have him just inside the top 100 and some don’t. Now, a few places did place Ortiz higher than any spot Bradfield has been but it took a while for Ortiz to be ranked and Bradfield not so much. Beavers will be there soon enough and since Beavers is much younger, they definitely could value Beavers as much or more than a guy like Ortiz…especially a team that’s far away.

      I don't want to overstate it but imo having one, or preferably two, slots in the bullpen that you can shuttle guys with is a must.

      Keep in mind that the bullpen had to cover 6.1 IP yesterday. 4 IP on Friday. All scoreless. Btw. Throwing 13.1 IP in a 3 games series is a ton for a bullpen.  I do agree that we use our pen so much that it would be more valuable to have a shuttle spot as the last spot than a guy like Viera. We should have a fresh arm for every game with the shuttle.

      I don't think it's an outlier so much as by design.  Elias has been targeting LH bats in the draft. My guess is he thinks he can get a RH bat for the outfield on the cheap if he needs one.

      Thank you for allowing me to join.  We obviously have more pressing issues to deal with.  And you all have probably been over this a hundred times.  I was thinking about the prospect of losing the Santander and Hays right-handed at-bats in the OF soon (Hays will of course continue to fight into next year) and then I looked at our OF depth and saw almost all lefties in the wings.   Maybe Mayo, Norby and Rhodes will become factors, but when you get right down to it, I don't see a RH hitting, starting OF'er on the horizon.   Am I missing something?  Not a big deal right now, but seems like an outlier thing.

      I don’t think we see McDermott this year.  His control is a major hurdle.  I’m not sure how Povich would do out of the pen.  I imagine it would be a challenge to get used to. But, I do like the idea of bring pitchers in as a reliever to give them a taste at a young age like the Os did back in the day.
