And other posters have speculated the Orioles might be having cash flow issues and they need the 2022 Davis contract deferred just to keep the team running. I'd doubt financially it's that bad, but I don't rule it out.

If a team with their low payroll is having cashflow problems then there are many teams with cash flow problems.  I don't believe that for one second.  Because of Covid they aren't generating the cash they were before but they are far from broke.  MLB players are still getting big time contracts.

Honestly the drop off the cliff after getting paid has ruined Davis for me.

I don’t care if he got lazy, changed the drug regiment that made him successful, or whatever.

He basically stole 100+ million from the fans and contributed heavily to the collapse.

I know that Angelos agreed to pay him. But, it’s the fans that suffered most. The team was hamstrung from the contract and the results were terrible

Yeah, I think he owed it to the Orioles to be in the best possible shape he could be. Now if he was doing it illegally, he wasnt caught, so I dont know how he got so big and powerful in his earlier years. But he was never the same player once the contract was signed.

Not to derail the thread about money in general, but I tend to agree with you that they have enough cash to operate. That said, between Covid, poor performance and a drastically different financial forecast for MASN, the Angelos' bottom line can't be anything near what they were hoping.

My best guess is they're preparing to sell when PA passes away. If that's the case, we could be looking at very cheap ownership this offseason (at least) as well. We'll see I guess.

That could be another 8 years. he's 92 but he also has great healthcare. I hope they aren't waiting for that to happen.

I was about to disagree with you, but then I realized I was thinking about Steve Kline, the jerk we signed as a free agent who wasn't very good and talked about how Baltimore wasn't a great baseball town.

You are right, Brandon Kline was a good guy, despite being a UVa alum.   He was in our system quite a while and finally made the majors, and just wasn't QUITE good enough to stick around, which is a shame.

You're alright...

For a Hokie. ;)

I am not an expert, but my recollection was that because of tax reasons, it's expensive to sell now and it'll be expensive to keep the team after he passes. Again, I'm not the expert by far on this. Just my recollection.

Just asking? And I am glad this Saga is over as well! Since Chis is retiring due to a degenerative hip condition, could insurance have any positive affect on the Orioles payout? If his contract was insured or partially insured, the insurance company would be a partner in this as well. May be the reason why the Orioles did not wait for next year and any benefit from a delayed labor negotiations settlement.

One hundred sixty-one million United States dollars

Is this the lack of Adderall?  Because unless there is a naked blonde standing in the dugout I cant understand why his eyes are where they are.

Who knows.

The degeneration of his entire career was partially explainable (for reasons DrungoHazewood went over) but there was still plenty of bafflement from his mental lapses to his deceptions over his effort and his almost kind of callous disregard for how bad he was.  Like, I know I saw those articles about how he was in tears over how bad he was, which is what I would've expected, but it didn't seem to get reflected in his effort or his tone.  He acted to me like he didn't care that much.  But what do I know, I'm not in his head.

Just so glad he is gone.

It's hard to say if that was something like ADD - or if he had simply given up by then.  Probably a combination of things.

    • You mean like spank the yankees a couple times this week??
    • I notice Coby Mayo listed as a RF.
    • Astros admit it is a knee sprain for Yordan and he is out the Mariners series, with hoped for return at the Guardians Friday. He will play the playoffs and I guess benefit from that infielders on the dirt rule, as otherwise defenses might have been able to put all of them well on to the grass like Pujols at the end. Mariners got the must opener with "just" Bryce Miller - now they have Logan Gilbert and George Kirby tonight and tomorrow afternoon against Yordan-free lineups to try and make the weekend interesting.
    • I think a lot of fans frustration (well, at least mine) comes from a combination of this specific team and history.  This 2024 team has been extremely frustrating.  It is factually true that in the last 106 games they have only one walk-off win and only two wins when trailing after 6 innings. They have no series wins against an over .500 team since July 4th, and the worst record in the AL East since June 20. They cannot put together any long winning streaks, they have a real hard time generating a "big" inning, their all-star catcher has had an extremely disappointing second half, and their prized rookies have been far worse than anyone could have imagined.  So this has been without question a three-month plus malaise that feels like it just won't end.  Every time we want to feel enthusiastic or excited, we get shut down by a punch in the gut like Saturday and Sunday. The injuries have undoubtedly played a role, but I don't buy that they should have played this much of a role. Especially not on offense. The history part of it does not relate to the current team, but is a real pain point for fans like me who have been around for decades.  This organization last won an LCS game on October 13, 1997.  Almost 27 years since their last single game win in the LCS. Think about that and how much life has passed since that time.  Over those 27 years, 22 different fanbases have experienced their team in the World Series at least once.  If we go back to the last time the Orioles won the pennant, we can add another 4 fanbases to the list of World Series participants.  I think a 3 game sweep in last year's playoffs hurts us far more than it would Red Sox fans or Cardinals fans or Dodgers fans who are there regularly.  We have far fewer bites at the apple than most other fans, and every opportunity lost just resonates that much more.   No one should ever think the Orioles fans are spoiled, regardless of how much we may complain.  We are among the least spoiled fanbases not only in baseball, but in all of professional sports.
    • Wowww. 4 years in a row, that is damn impressive.
    • He's absolutely right, but of course, anything prior to the 2023 sweep means nothing to this current squad.  Last year we got a glimpse into this team with pressure. We all, including me, pointed towards their inexperience, but now we have a 2nd half of a season with mostly the same players wilting under pressure. Whether that pressure be because of the game situation, expectations, trying to do too much with other players out, or whatever, we have another data point of this current team struggling when it matters. Now, barring a complete a total collapse by the Orioles over the last two series of the year (not out of the question but the that the Royals and Twins are crashing too make it almost assured this team will back into the playoffs), this team is going to the playoffs. This will be the real test because gone are the excuses of injury with Westburg, Urias, Coulombe and Webb back and the team will most likely face another struggling wild card team. That should give some hope that this team will win at least a game, and maybe a series if things go right.  Crazier things have happened before in the playoffs, but only a miracle World Series appearance would be able to overcome this frustrating season and end the discussion over the lack of clutch of this core group of players.
