Jordan Lyles posted a 5.34 FIP and 1.9 HR/9 in 2021.

Matt Harvey posted a 4.60 FIP and 1.3 HR/9 in 2021.

And Harvey pitched in the brutally difficult AL East while Lyles pitched in the much more forgiving AL West.

We literally should have just given Matt Harvey seven million dollars instead.

Who says that Harvey won’t get more in this market?

In what universe does this make any amount of sense? Yusei Kikuchi was available, as was Zach Davies and Matt Kuhl: all way preferable to this guy if we wanted depth.  I can't believe we just forked over 7 million for a guy whose ceiling is maybe an eyelash over replacement level.

I actually think Elias is crazy.  If this is the kind if depth he's going to sign then we will never be a winning franchise under him.

By the way, I really wanted us to hire Kim Ng, and I'm increasingly convinced that she is going to guide the Marlins to the playoffs before the Orioles make it there.

I think there is potential here.

Lyles is a big strong guy, 6'5", 230lbs, which gives him the frame to pitch a lot of innings.   Baseball Savant shows he has 6 pitches - 4 seam fastball (93), Slider (83.3),  Curve (80.3), Sinker (91.6) and a Change at (86.4), Cutter (86.3).  Over the last 3 years different pitches have been effective for him in different years.  In different years the 4 seamer, slider, curve, and change have been effective.

He was effective as a starter with the Brewers in 2019 but has not done as well with the Pirates and Rangers in 2020 and 2021.  Maybe better coaching  and analytics will help him.

Chris Holt has never coached Lyles.  Lyles was a 1st round pick of the Astros in 2008 out of high school.  Holt began coaching with the Astros in 2014.  Lyles was traded to the Rockies in Dec. 2013.  Elias and Lyles were both with the Astros in 2012 and 2013.

It will be interesting to see what Holt can do with Lyles in ST.

There's no upside there. The only thing going for him is he was durable last season, so theoretically he could help save the bullpen.  Otherwise, he's the pitching equivalent of Odor. - with the difference being they're actually paying Lyles.  There's no way to sugar-coat it; this signing is bad and disappointing, and he will give up a ton of homers in Baltimore.  .

They have to pay a premium to get anyone to pitch here. I’m fine with the signing. It is what it is. Trying to eat innings and not be a complete embarrassment is not exactly a high bar.

Nothing other than not wanting to spend any money is stopping them from adding more depth.

This doesn’t stop them from adding more arms like you mentioned other than wanting to pinch pennies.

Someone else made the Steve Brault comparison, and I agree. This guy is rich-man's Steve Brault. Would have rather just had Brault for less money

I'd guess that they will still sign someone like Brault in addition to the Lyle's signing.

I don't care for the signing, but if he can pitch to a shade over 5 ERA and 170-180 innings he'd be an ace in Baltimore.

What’s stopping them from making a move like Brault? This certainly should not.

I don't get this at all. Seems like 7M should buy a better pitcher for a year. Lyles is the kind of guy you sign right before spring training starts. Obviously they see something they think they can fix, I sure hope they're right.

Not that this move would excite anyone other than Lyles and his family/friends they have to spend some money.

I’m not saying spending $6M this year with a $1M buyout next year will flip the narrative about the Orioles but from an optics view alone they have to do something.
