Adley Rutschman 2022

Just Regular

From Roch this morning:

Rutschman is catching bullpen sessions and participating in some defensive drills while also continuing his throwing and hitting progressions. He got his first live at-bats a few days ago, “and in Adley Rutschman style, he hit a home run,” Packer said.

What if he’s looking really rusty?   Let’s say he’s striking out 30% of the time and not making great contact.  Do you just bring him up anyway and let him work out the kinks in the majors?   Or do you wait until he’s at full throttle in AAA?

I can see arguments either way on that one.

You bring him up.  He will slump in his pro career.  He doesn’t need to be perfect when he comes up.

Second Roch update. So not beginning in Norfolk, according to the Roch.

My attendance has been poor lately, but what's up with Adley? Any chance he gets back on the field this month?

Rutschman is nearing a return to games. He’s catching some bullpen sessions and doing defensive work, and he’s taking live at-bats (the dead ones are useless.) So yeah, there’s daily progress and pretty soon he should be getting game action. But not immediately at Triple-A. This will be an injury rehab progression that sends him to the lower affiliates. Again, the key word is “soon.” The box scores will dictate how quickly he moves.

It's early but this is the frontrunner for least surprising news of the day.

I still think the super 2 cutoff is in play.

Also the 2023 draft is the "super" draft where the Clubs rostered less than their usual fraction of the High School Class of 2020.

I haven't heard for sure either way, but believe lottery only affects first six picks, and worst record still gets slots associated with 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, etc.

Adley has nothing to prove at AAA.  So he is essentially a major leaguer on rehab.  Normally a major leaguer goes to AAA to rehab.  So I don't really know what to make of this.

Excruciating, honestly.

Not really. For instance Santander started his rehab in Bowie last year. It seems to depend on how long they’ve been out, and which teams are at home.

That isn't true, especially for the Orioles where their AAA team is further away than all of their other farm teams. The Orioles tend to send players on minor league rehab to whichever local affiliate is playing a home game. If multiple affiliates are playing home games, they will choose whichever affiliate plays at a higher level.

The keys words to me are progression and affiliates.

Going to be a multistage process.

Norfolk and Bowie are home this weekend.   Then they both go on the road next week.   Aberdeen is home next week but if he goes there he will only be there for a couple of games and then he has to go on the road at AA or AAA.

Makes more sense to me for Adley to go to AAA where he is with Grayson and Bradish.

Yeah. Even if Rutschman plays well, it could be a month from when he starts playing minor league games until he gets to Baltimore. They will continue to slow walk this. June seems like a realistic possibility.

    • Wouldn’t even consider it. I wouldn’t offer anything more than the QO
    • Adley and it’s not particularly close. I’m not writing off Adley because of a second half slump.
    • This season is far from over but that doesn't mean we can't walk and chew gum at the same time. This is going to be a very interesting offseason. The Os have a lot of spots likely secured for 2025 already and yet there is plenty of uncertainty as well. Barring a trade, these guys are definitely on the team next year: Adley, Gunnar, Holliday, Mayo*, Kjerstad, Westburg, Cowser, Urias, Eflin, GRod, Kremer, Felix, Perez, DC, Rogers and Cano.  That is 16 of your 26 man roster. The salaries for those 16 players will total around $46M, give or take. With those 16 players, you have your entire starting IF (including C), 2 OFers, 3 or 4 starting pitchers, 4 or 5 relievers (depending on Rogers) and your key bench guy. *Mayo potentially could start in the minors since he has looked  bad this year but its a SSS and I think they are committed to him and Im not sure going to the minors is going to be some major help for him.  But he will be on the active roster at some point next year. The Os also have the ability to keep (meaning they are under team control...salary estimates following player) Cedric Mullins (8.5M), Mountcastle (5.5M), OHearn (8M option), G Soto (6M), Dominguez (8M option...has 500K buyout), Mateo (3.2M), Akin (2.5M) and Webb (2.2M). For your 10 remaining roster spots, you need a back up C, 1 starting OFer, 5 pitchers and 3 other offensive players. Some of the relievers I listed will be brought back but others likely traded. Those are cheap contracts but the O's need to add another legit high leverage arm and someone(s) will be left off because of that. Either way, the team has plenty of money to add to this team given the low payroll of those definitely back.  Also, keep in mind Bradish will be on the payroll next year and I am assuming they will non tender Tyler Wells. Depending on his status, it is possible they bring him back but not sure I see the point. Having so many cheap players on the roster, many of whom will be cheap for a while, gives you so much flexibility. Also, it’s certainly possible that some of the players  I listed in the definite 16 will be traded, which will open up a spot or more.
    • Your last statement I dont believe is correct with a 2 way tie against the Tigers in this scenario. We would both be 87-75 and 30-22 in the division. It would then go to interdivison record, which I believe we would win by 2 games.
    • There's no joy up here in Suxville!
    • Now we need to cheer for them this weekend.
    • The Elephant has been eliminated from catching the Orioles for a playoff spot, with 9 games remaining.
