Which catcher goes away when Rutchman arrives?

I just assumed it was Chirinos that was staying and Bemboom was going as soon as Rutschman was ready. Chirinos is a backup catcher. He's a good glove that can't really hit. As a side note, how is Nottingham's defense?

Couldn't tell you about Nottingham's defense, but I did notice he's not getting the lion's share of AB down in Norfolk:

Cumberland: 46 AB
Nottingham: 28 AB
Hudgins: 20 AB
Taylor: 7 AB (I think because he's always with the team on the taxi squad?)

I'm not really sure why Hudgins is on the roster eating AB from Nottingham?

With Rutschman getting called up to Norfolk has the team announced a corresponding roster move with the catchers? Maybe they won't make any changes now because Rutschman is probably only spending a week with Norfolk before making his Orioles debut.

Then we should definitely expect to see some movement with the catchers in the organization.

Nottingham didn’t play from April 24 - May 3.   An injury, I assume.  He played on Wednesday.

He honestly doesn't need to play everyday as I don't see how he is an everyday catcher in the Majors. Get him used to playing as a reserve. If he makes this team at any time, it'll be as a backup. That's Chirinos' role to lose, but if he gets injured Nottingham may be the next man up. I'm not sure Bemboom stays in the organization as I'm not sure there are enough ABs to be had in AAA.

Under no circumstance do I want to see Mountcastle lose at bats to Mancini. Mancini needs to start hitting - end of story. I also don't want to see Adley at first unless the minor league numbers show he rakes when he plays there. What can the Orioles realistically expect to receive for Mancini and/or Santander? They probably have more invested in Chirinos, so I think we know he stays.

With the way that Mancini has been hitting, the O's will be lucky to receive the infamous PTBNL.  That's with the O's paying most of his remaining salary.

So we shouldn’t get Adley extra ABs at first base unless the numbers show that he has raked in a minuscule sample size?  That makes absolutely no sense.

And we only have 900k invested in Chirinos.

Adley needs all the at bats he can get on the days he’s not catching whether that be at 1B or DH. Sure there will be the rest days, but that isn’t going to be every time he’s not catching.

If Rutschman is really going to be an .800 plus OPS hitter and the Orioles aren’t going to ride him into the ground at catcher like Wieters. Then it’s only natural to get him more at bats while protecting Rutschman from the wear and tear of catching.

I agree with you.  The person I quoted said Adley should only play 1B if he has shown that he can rake on days when he’s playing there.  It doesn’t make sense.  He should get plenty of ABs at first to get his bat in the lineup and save him from the wear and tear of catching every day.

If that’s at the expense of Mancini, then so be it.   Everyone loves Trey but he’s not part of the future.

I'm all for Adley getting AB's, but from what I've read he's a below average first baseman. Leave Mountcastle at first and DH Adley on the days he's not catching.

DHing a catcher is tricky if the starting catcher gets injured, you lose the DH.  I'm not saying it will happen, but there's a slim chance they carry three catchers if Rutschman is going to get time at DH or  he might actually get more time at first instead, to avoid that issue,

I haven’t seen a lot of reports on his defense at 1b, but most seem to indicate he’s perfectly fine in the field. Mountcastle though is a below avg defensive 1b, so regardless having Adley at first occasionally doesn’t seem like a big deal

    • My guy, you are on record saying the season is over after losing Bradish.  If the O's lose this series, it sucks yeah, but it doesn't sink the season. I don't think it's a must win. Is it a must win for the Yankees? If they lose the series, they'll be like a game back of us.
    • As of today, there are 5teams that i think are definite sellers...the Rockies, Marlins, A's, White Sox and Angels Best relievers amongst those teams: Andrew Nardi: ERA is over 5 but FIP is under 3.  His statcast numbers are solid.  His K rate is over 10 and his BB rate is 2.4.  He was good last year.  Lefty reliever Tanner Scott: We all know about Scott.  His ERA is under 2 now.  The K rate has jumped up to almost 10 but the walk rate is 6.5.  His statcast page is also excellent. Estevez:  LA closer.  Good K rate, great walk rate. xERA 2.66. Statcast page is good in some areas but he also allows a lot of hard hit balls. Luis Garcia:  Very good K rate, solid BB rate.  Statcast numbers aren't bad but like Estevez, he can give up some hard contract.  xERA is over 4 but FIP is 3.58, much better than his actual ERA.  Should see improvement. Kopech:  Has been a favorite of mine but admittingly its based off of what he did as a reliever in 2021 and the idea that getting him here will make a big impact. There isn't much to point to about him outside of his ability to get Ks and miss bats.  Everything else is below average to awful. This would need to be something that the Os see in him that they think they can fix.  He has some of he best stuff in the sport. Obviously we know about Mason Miller.  He is the best of the bunch but I wouldn't pay what it will likely cost to get him.  Erceg is hurt.   As I have talked about before, Nardi would be my target. I think hes the best of the bunch and being left handed is a bonus.  The 5+ ERA he has will hopefully allow the Os to get him cheaper too.    But I would target any of these guys and I believe we need at least 2 new relievers.
    • That's a good point.  However, a counter point could be made that when the Ravens moved to Baltimore a lot of the people were fans of other teams and the NFL combined with the Redskins did EVERYTHING that they could to make Baltimore an extension of the Washington franchise's fanbase. Yet the Ravens were able to overcome that and capture the hearts and minds of the market. They have had it now for almost a quarter century. My point is that in an age/era where fans/customers have more access to entertainment and information than EVER BEFORE, org behavior/excellence matters more than EVER BEFORE. The Phillies didn't always have the type of fanbase that they have now. The Padres didn't always draw the attendance figures that the are now. I would argue the Red Sox are going through the inverse now. They have fallen just a bit. But a few more years of being in mediocrity and they are going to go back to their early 2000's and 90's days. I could be as wrong as two left shoes, but I really feel that org behavior matters. Marketplace interest/engagement/momentum is not random and not solely population driven. STL Cards have a population smaller than ours and a comparable market size and they are always relevant in their market and always a top half payroll. Heck we were top 10 as late as 2017 under the awfulness of Angelos.
    • I think it’s a little more important than any other mid June series. Any series against a team you’re close to in the standings is important, but there’s a lot of games to play.
    • Is it make or break? No. But is it important? Yes. Obviously, the team doesn't think it's any more important due to the pitching they've lined up for the series. I'll be happy if we win one and ecstatic if we win 2 or 3.
    • An agent should represent the best interests of his clients. The client and his family determine those best interests. I don't like Boras not because I feel he doesn't represent his clients well, but because I think an agent should basically be seen and not heard. In my opinion, Boras sets himself up as if he is a peer - near equal to those he represents. Semi Commissioner. How many other agents have a "press scum" at the winter meetings? Another case in point - this article. It's just Boras being Boras. The above feelings are mine and I don't repesent them as ones you should necessarily agree with so I will not argue their appropriateness. Just getting off my chest. To me Boras and Yankees are equals. Also, in my opinion, our players represented by Boras will extend if they deem the money fair and they see their future playing careers best served in Baltimore and not some bigger money, brighter lights city. I think the Orioles will spend but they will spend, as has been said, intelligently.  We shall see how it plays out. I do think our new ownership changes the potential calculus. So, I root today and don't get too hot and bothered about tomorrow. Just beat the Damn Yankees!
    • Fangraphs' Jon Becker mentions Carlos Estevez as a relief rental along with a few others we've already mentioned here about a zillion times. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-of-the-order-yankees-orioles-race-heats-up-as-deadline-looms/
