Favorite World Series Menory, post 1983

Wow, a fun exercise.  What are my favorite World Series memory since 1983?

1)  2015.  The Royals win the Series after beating the Orioles somehow.  2015 shoulda been.  I think about that one a lot.

2)  2003.  The Marlins beat the Yankees.  What else do you need to know.

3)  2001.  Arizona and a bloody sock beat the Yankees.  It was magic.

There are other great memories of other series', but most of those post 83 WS memories are smiling while watching WS show replays of past WS and getting to remember that time when Cal Ripken, Jr. caught the final out with a little hop.  It was the best of times!!!

OP didn't ask but my worst post 83 memory also involves WS showing flashbacks to 83 and remembering that in 1983, I thought Ripken and the Orioles would repeat 1983 with about 20 titles.  It was the worst of times!!!

Luis Gonzalez's duckfart over a drawn-in Yankees infield off Rivera.

Kirk Gibson’s homer, game 1 of the 1988 WS against the A’s.  Definitely my favorite “non-home team” sports memory.

Kirk Gibson's homer defied everything.  Looking at the replay, it's always unfathomable to me how that ball got out.  The swing looked so weak and awful.  I bet if Gibson had 100 chances to do it again that night, he couldn't do it.

Bloody sock was the ALCS in 2004.

Looks like he kind of flicked his wrists with no leg push at all.  If I did that the ball might get to second base.  Did someone sneak in a baseball that had a super bounce ball in the center?

The other thing about this that no one mentions is that it was an epic battle to begin with.  He fouled off two pitches right away, got into a quick 0-2 count.  Battled back to 3-2 while fouling off more pitches and then hits that homer.

I also always liked this, too.

Talk about an all-time jinx.  if NBC doesn't flash that graphic in front of Eck, does Gibson hit that homer?  We'll never know.

I also don't know how to describe this, but there's something about the way sports were broadcast in the mid-late 80s, especially night baseball games that has always just looked so cool to me.  It's slightly fuzzy, slightly grainy with great contrasts and tones, I'm not really sure how to put it into words.  But this, the Buckner grounder, Ryan's 5000th strikeout, etc...I dunno what it is about the way those broadcasts look but I can't get enough of it.  I'm sure you guys think I'm crazy and I probably am.

Anyway, this is good stuff:

I'm not old enough to remember Kirk Gibson's homer.

I do have vivid memories of watching the Luis Gonzalez hit in 2001 and remember the 2002 World Series (namely Game 6 with Erstad's homer in the eighth and Percival closing it out). As much as I hate the Red Sox now, watching them win in 2004 is memorable (even though the ALCS is much more memorable than the World Series). The Cubs in 2016 was also a big one. The 2017 World Series was a great one at the time, too, though that's been ruined since.

Isn't that a weird thing to remark upon? This was mid-October, so at that point Eck hadn't allowed a homer in six or seven weeks.  Epic all time closer, wouldn't you'd think not allowing a homer in two months was normal? In 2016 Zach Britton went from April 12th to the end of the year without allowing a homer.  Cionel Perez' last homer allowed this year was on July 15th.  And in 1988 there were like 30% fewer homers than today.

Actually, in '16 Britton once went over two months without allowing a run.

Rajai Davis off Aroldis when he was still Aroldis 2 runs down in the 8th inning of Game 7 was stunning.   It'd be like McKenna getting Hader to move Championship Probability a ton.

It had an even shorter shelf life than '75 Fisk (Joe Morgan has very well pounded into me the Reds won the next day) as his team gave it back a couple innings later.

    • More Corbin Burnes day please. 19 whiffs yesterday for Burnes with curveball generating 5 whiffs (on just 7 swings) and slider generating 7 whiffs (on just 8 swings).  Definitely the best his breaking stuff has looked all year.  Key was starting in zone and dropping out, whereas Burnes had been burying too many into the dirt and not starting the pitches competitively within the zone.  Palmer has mentioned Burnes preference to stay away/away with most offerings, but yesterday Burnes finally seemed to vary location at least a little bit and pitched to more quadrants (sprinkled sinkers in to RHs and cutters in to LHs).  To me that is what made offspeed more effective instead of hitters staying back and looking away/away.
    • For all the gnashing of teeth from some about him only going 6 innings every time, he's only 1 inning short of Zack Wheeler who is largely considered the best SP in baseball.
    • rWAR is Baseball-Reference (some call it bWAR).  fWAR is Fangraphs.  fWAR now uses OAA as one if its main inputs for defense.   Some people are complete OAA converts and believe it’s vastly superior to the other advanced defensive metrics.  I’m still in the mode of looking at all of them (Fangraphs publishes OAA and it’s old stat UZR, BB-ref publishes Rdrs and Rtot).  If there’s a consensus, I buy it.  If 3 of 4 basically agree, I buy it.  If it’s a split, I go with whichever ones agree with my eye test.   Not exactly scientific but it keeps me sane.
    • GM John Mozeliak did a 15-minute sit down with the local NBC affiliate a few days ago - some of what was discussed was TV revenue uncertainty.    It was interesting to compare that with the Orioles partnership having the club and network to maneuver with.
    • I happened to see him yesterday.  The game results aren’t on Savant yesterday but I kept looking for this new cutter and kept seeing 96 mph fastballs and sliders.  Pretty sure Savant showed like a 90% cutter usage before that game.  Now it’s down to 66% and shows more of the fastball and curve.   He have up a double to a LH hitter on a slider but looked good overall.   His last pitch was a 12-6 slider/curve which could be a great swing and miss pitch.  The mechanics looked smooth and the fastball command looked good.  I’m just curious if he was throwing cuttters and they break like sliders or he just wasn’t throwing it yesterday.   Maybe @Tony-OH knows?
    • With the infield depth in the Os pipeline, I'm beginning to think that Holiday should get some run in CF to see if he's capable of being Mullins heir apparent.  Mullins currently is under control thru 2025 and would be a FA in 2026.  Currently, the organizational depth at CF isn't great and I believe with Holiday's body type, he could potentially fit in at that position.  I'd like to see next year's non-pitching roster look something like this: C-Rutschman 1B-Mountcastle 2B-Westburg SS-Henderson 3B-Mayo LF-Cowser CF-Holiday RF-Kjerstad Bench - backup catcher, Hays (2026 FA), Mullins (2026 FA), O'Hearn (2026 FA), Mateo (2026 FA)/Norby
