Babe Ruth, Jim Abbott, Gerrit Cole

Adrian Beltre, Julio Franco, Matt Bush

Bill Buckner, Gary Sheffield, Rick Monday

Some nice pulls there.  I flunked out on Brewers/Rangers and Brewers/Dodgers, and my answer for LA first rounder drew way too high a score.

I'm a day behind.   Finished yesterday's this morning.  9/9, 28, 7 Orioles.  Couldn't come up with an Oriole for KC-center field or Cubs-center field.

I'll get to today's a bit later.

Cubs CF, you could use Felix Pie, Rafael Palmeiro, or Jerome Walton. I believe I was able to use all three (can’t remember the first column).

Yeah should have remembered Pie.  I had totally forgotten Jerome Walton ever played for the Orioles.   And it's hard to picture Raffy in CF... although I did use John Lowenstein for Cleveland CF for 0.1%.   I didn't KNOW he played CF but he came up with them as a versatile OF/IF sub so I figred he had a game there at one point or another and was right.

My lowest score ever:

⚾️ Immaculate Grid 324 9/9:
Rarity: 11
IMMACULATE!
🟩🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩
Play at:
https://immaculategrid.com
@immaculategrid x @baseball_ref

And 7 Orioles used!   And the first and probably only time I use a Seattle Pilot to fill a Brewer square!

Spoiler

COLUMNS:   Red Sox / Brewers / 1st Round Draft Pick

Yankee Row:  Mike Torrez 0.2%, Jim Bouton 2%, Mike Mussina 0.4%

Texas Row:  Koji Uehara 0.8%, Kevin Reimer 0.3%, Will Clark 0.9%

Dodger Row:  Justin Turner 5%, Rick Dempsey 0.3%, Mike Morgan 0.08%

Proud of myself for the Reimer pull.   Kind of surprised some of the rarity scores were so low.   Turner from LA to Boston is a very recent move, usually that kind of guy will be higher than 5%.   The 1st round draft picks seem lower than they should be.   But I'll happily take my 11.

So could I have done all Orioles?

Yankees/Brewers -- obviously could have used Dempsey but I put him in LAD/Milw.  Others I could have used:  Chris Dickerson, Jerry Hairston, Latroy Hawkins, Jace Peterson, Jamie Quirk, Mark Reynolds, Lenn Sakata, Steve Barber (another Seattle Pilot), Ricky Bones, Paul Mirabella, Jesse Orosco.  Wow, a TON of Orioles.   None of them has me slapping myself on the forehead and calling myself stupid for not remembering him, though.  All would have been tough pulls.

Rangers/Brewers -- Yovani Gallardo, Rick Helling, Nelson Cruz, Jordan Lyles, Odell Jones, Gregg Zaun -- yeah, some bad misses there that I am kicking myself for.

Or I could have used Dempsey for Yankees/Brewers and come up with a Dodger/Brewer:   Tommy Davis, Dana Eveland, Jerry Hairston, Cesar Izturis, Jesse Orosco.

Yeah, all Orioles was do-able, but I couldn't pull it off today.

That's an amazing performance.

My five lowest scores are: 5, 17, 19, 25, 33.   The 5 came on what I'd say was the easiest grid ever (10/28/23) and all my answers but one were at 0.5% or below.   Three of my five points came on one answer.

Going for Orioles often tends to lower my rarity score.   Pulling Mike Torrez for Red Sox/Yankees, or Rick Dempsey for any combination of Minn/NYY/LAD/Cle/Milw, and it's guaranteed to be a fraction of a percent.

A few more: Corey Patterson, Dwight Smith, Junior Lake, Lou Montanez, Julio Borbon, Quinten Berry, Ryan Freel.

My lack of Negro League knowledge did me in.   Didn't complete the grid.   But I did fill in the bottom two rows with all Orioles who totalled 1.43%.

Spoiler

Bob Boyd 0.1%, Eddie Murray 0.4%, Tim Raines 0.1%

Mickey Tettleton 0.2%, Wayne Gross 0.6%, Don Baylor 0.03%

9/9, 39 today.

Spoiler

Jackie Robinson, Minnie Minoso, Monte Irvin

Tony Muser, Ryan Minor, Curt Motton

Bert Campaneris, Wayne Gross, Don Baylor

Robinson cost me 29 of my 39 points.  I was surprised that Minor got a 2% vote, thought he'd be lower.   All my other O's and A's were under 1%.

I answered an A's question in the wrong column.  And my Negro League answers were fairly common.

O's score was under 1% though!

    • The great news is no one running the Orioles cares what you or I think should be scrutinized or not.  I choose to be happy with the winning results and happy we have the Reigning Manager and Executive of the Year.   You can continue to take shots at Hyde and Elias all you want.  You will be on ignore from me going forward.
    • Super scary.  A 17y/o in Gainesville FL lost his life last December from being hit with a swing. A teammate was swinging inside a batting cage and the bat caught him.  I think folks that have been around the game a lot have seen and heard of similar situations and understand the gravity.  I heard it on the radio and my heart sunk.  I really hope Mateo is OK and it doesn’t turn out to be serious.
    • Mounty has gotten more patient, but he doesn't seem like the kind of hitter that changes his approach much depending on the situation.  But it's hard to question anyone's approach the day after hitting two homers.
    • His xSLG is 70 points higher than it actually is, his OBP is still .330, and Fangraphs has him as the 2nd most valuable OF’er defensively in the MLB.  Unlike Mullins, his expected stats are still strong and show that he’s just been hitting into bad luck.
    • Kind of a poor reason, because in making it, you’re suggesting that as long as we are winning, no decision needs to be scrutinized, which is obviously not true. And it also ignores defending Hyde’s decision to leave Tate in.  I don’t mind letting Tate start the inning, because he started the inning at only 8 pitches. But I do mind not yanking him immediately after letting the first guy on.  in twelve pitches he gave up single single double. I do not remember whether Coloumbe was warmed up at the beginning of the end or didn’t get up until after the start of the inning, but he should have been ready. If he wasn’t, that’s another mistake, even in foresight. The very least you have to do is have your next reliever ready, especially if you know you’re going to use him anyway. Only once has Tate gone more than one inning and only once did he throw more than 16 pitches.   Hydes use of the bullpen is frequently questionable not just after the fact but before the fact.  I appreciate the fact he didn’t want to use Vieira, and having him isn’t Hyde’s choice, as far as we know. But he still should have gone to Coloumbe sooner.  It’s really difficult to point to a single thing that causes a lost game, but this is arguably one of them. hopefully tomorrow we will have fresh shiny faces in the pen because we’re going to need them.
