What do we do about Jorge Mateo?

And next season?

I like to focus on next season after the season. Saying that, I'm not sure they can keep a luxury like him all season if he's not going to hit. How much he's used and how successful he is during the playoffs this year could go a long way for his potential role here in 2024 IMHO.

Mateo is giving nothing to the team right now. Mateo is supposed to at least be elite with his defense and he just isn't right now. Mateo is fast, but they have other players who can pinch run and also bring something useful to the team. Even if Gunnar is going to be out temporarily there's too much talent in the organization to just let Mateo play SS everyday until Gunnar's back.

I doubt the Orioles will do anything, but Mateo is a net negative right now and his hitting in April was merely a mirage. Mateo can't bunt so in the ninth inning he couldn't even move Westburg over to 2B. It's a pennant race and everyone needs to contribute in someway even if they're role players.

I strongly disagree with this statement. He is providing end-of-the-bench excellence. Strong shortstop defense and speed. And he leads team with 5 sac bunts. His bat is not zero against lefties.

(Did I seriously just respond to a post from July? Yes. Apparently I did.)

That’s a thing about this year’s Orioles. Stick around long enough and every player has come up big at some point. Seems like more than rhe blind pig or broken clock phenomenon.

In his last 16 games, dating back to August 20, Mateo has hit .302/.375/.419.  It’s been nice seeing him not be a complete black hole on offense.  I don’t really want him starting any playoff games, but if he had to come to the plate during one, at least right now there’d be some chance of getting a competitive at bat, unlike most of May-August.
