We can find examples of any scrub helping their team here and there. He also misplayed a flyball in the 9th that made a difference in the game. The 'HR robbing' catch is getting overrated attention. It wasn't that great of a play.

Cowser needs the experience is all I'm saying. We already know Mateo isn't that good.

1. McKenna also cost us a game this year on a much easier catch.  Send him down then over those other guys.

2. The misplay was a long single that would have turned 1 out into 2.  Assuming Tucker still hits a home run, we're still in a tied game.

1. McKenna is a better OF than Mateo.

2. You're right. Tied <> losing

We watched two different plays if you think Mateo brought a homer back into the ballpark last night.  Nice catch though.

CF is icing on the cake tbh. He can play SS very well and the rest of the infielders are flexible enough to move over to 2B or 3B if needed. I just mean he is a great 26th man to have, his skills fit that role, and I think it’s more helpful to have a good player for a well defined minor role than to bring up a young player that you hope can be an every day player and then have them sit on the bench most games. At least right now it is.

Statcast has a"stat" called Sprint Speed and 27.3 feet/sec is considered average.  They lists the O's as follows:

  • Mateo as tied for 6th fastest player in baseball at 30.1
  • Westburg at 29.0
  • Gunnar/McKenna at 28.8
  • Mountcastle at 28.2
  • Ortiz at 28.1
  • Mullins/Cowser/O'Hearn at 27.9
  • Hays at 27.6
  • Hicks at 27.4
  • Rutschman at 26.9
  • Santander/Urias at 26.6
  • Frazier at 26.3
  • McCann at 26.2

Holliday does not have a Statcast speed registered, but is considered to plus to plus-plus speed.  I imagine he runs at least as well as Gunnar.  Others may have a better understanding of just how fast he is.

FWIW I didn't feel the need to start a new thread, but instead felt this would be informative in regards to comparing players.

Never would have guessed O'Hearn is as fast as Mullins. Still not sure I believe it.

Ortiz easily should be the best player right now. But the choice really not Ortiz v Mateo. It’s Ortiz v Frazier/Urias, compared to Mateo the pinch run specialist with expanded rosters (September & one less pitcher in playoffs). That’s probably pretty close, but only because of Frazier and Urias and not Mateo.

However, Frazier/Urias have both been in their careers worse against LHP. The Orioles have also been insistent on playing Mateo against LHP. So Ortiz does represent a substantial upgrade against LHP, and for that reason he’s the right answer.

That said, the Orioles can have both Ortiz v. LHP and Mateo the pinch runner once September comes around. They’ve just apparently decided to suffer through the rest of this month with Mateo v LHP to get to that point.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Urias may need to go for a short stint on the IL with his heel injury that got him removed from the game last night and “solve” this problem for the next 10 days to get closer to September.

I'd guess that Ortiz would be the most solid all around guy right now. Mateo would have moments. Holliday's range of outcomes given his talent/age/lack of experience against top level talent are very wide.

If you told me that we brought up Holliday and he had an Andruw Jones like run, I wouldn't be shocked. I just assume that's a tall order for the young man.
