Thats the career comparison of Jack Flaherty to Dylan Cease, both 27 y.o.  A bit scary.   Kind of reminds me of the adage we would be throwing good $$ (prospects) after bad to acquire him.

I’d rather emulate the Minnesota-Miami trade of last winter where another current 27 y.o., Pablo Lopez was acquired for batting champ Luis Arraez.

But then again look at this comparison. https://stathead.com/tiny/4ytDy    Scary??

I’m not sure the Orioles should be depending upon the “let’s see if we can fix this guy” strategy to improve playoff performance.  Time to go after a pitcher on an ascending trajectory.   Or is trading a “really big” name of ours too scary?

I'll be honest, I was going more off the name than really looking closer at his stuff. While his stuff is, he got hit really hard last year and 2022 really is a bit of an outlier. I'd still take him for say, Cowser and Povich, but may not be willing to give up much of a 3rd piece. Maybe somebody like John Rhodes or Hunter Haskins or even Urias.

2022 is what drives his value. If you take that year away, you don’t consider giving up Cowser and may not even give up a top 100 type guy.

But 2022 did happen and it shows his potential, so it makes him intriguing.

Well, I've been told over and over again that we must clear out a regular spot for Kjerstad asap, and either do the same for Ortiz or trade him into such a situation, likewise asap.  So it seems that's the general consensus here.

They could get one of Kjerstad/Cowser/Ortiz and then maybe another minor piece.  I'm still not sure I'd do it, but that is at least a reasonable framework imo.

I’d offer one of Cowser/Ortiz/Norby and Stowers.

As other posters have mentioned, Cease’s bref comps top out at Flaherty. Skip the trade, unless analytics are overwhelming, and sign Jack to a one year deal (low risk). Trade at the deadline in good fashion.

Jack Flaherty went from 30 IP to 130+ in  2023, year over year (my concern on the trade). Will Cease have any issues this coming year?

TBH, sign a high ceiling SP in FA and trade at the deadline, as needed. Or nickel and dime the waiver wire.

More than ownership will pay.(and quite frankly, more than we should go given his injury history)

Nowadays, what pitcher doesn't get hurt?  It's tough to find that workhorse that can throw 200 innings per year.  Gibson was close this year (192, I believe).  The last two pitchers to throw 200 innings in a year for the O's were Tillman and Guthrie.  Snell has maxed out at 180 innings and Cease at 186.

I think Dylan Cease would absolutely drive us NUTS with his 10+ BB%. I know we're desperate for a staff ace, but Cease feels like the thing you impulse buy (and regret later) when the the thing you actually wanted sells out. He's a Go-bot and we need a Transformer.

So you want the showy knock-off instead of the OG?
