Cease vs everyone else

Why would Elias trade Westburg?

Because we have boku IF.  He’s our best trade chip IMO.  I’d hate doing it, but he’s likely the cost of doing business for a difference maker.  We are relatively light in the OF and have an over abundance of IF.

Would the Marlins play/value Westburg at SS?

The Marlins talk is picking up because of just natural conclusions being drawn. The Cease talks have been going on since last deadline. I think both sides know what each other wants and now it’s a matter of who blinks first. The Marlins give us some leverage and a backup option.

Getz wasn’t hired until after the trade deadline

Good info. I see he was the asst GM though. Also, the debuts of Westburg and Cowser happened. We weren’t in a position to trade Westburg then because he was helping the MLB club, and Cowser had just had a terrible debut.

So what’s changed from the deadline last year?  Getz is now the GM. We can afford to trade Westburg because of Holliday and Mayo. Cowser and Ortiz are not headliners. If they were, this trade would’ve happened.

Trading Westburg will hurt, but we also have a whole MLB OF that will need to be replaced by OD next year likely. Plus, a 1B/DH option in O’Hearn. So it makes sense to trade Westburg and keep the OF prospects.

I'd be down to trade Westburg.

I remember before he made his MLB debut reading some analysis that he was likely to be eventually traded because his bat would play so poorly at Camden Yards. He was a righty who pulled the ball a lot.

I just checked his splits for his first 208 ABs in the bigs:

Home: .662 OPS

Away: .768 OPS

That's a pretty small sample size.

That's fair. Just something to keep an eye on, not a dealbreaker for Westburg or anything.

I just looked up the Marlins stadium dimensions. I think you could make a case that he'd have a higher OPS there, though.

Yeah...didn't mean for that to sound like I was bashing.   Also, I don't object to Westburg going in the right deal.   I like him, but if he can be a key piece to acquire a starter, I'd be all for it.

If the eight Tier 1 guys all make it, there's only one starting role for Westburg or Ortiz or Norby on future Orioles teams.     That's loosely giving EBJ some separation from these infielders in overall future projection.

I think as Clubs manage rest the 10th guy probably is right there in importance with the 9 starters for the regular season, but that's still someone riding the bench in the tournament.

Opening Day I'd be happy for them and us if they all find starting roles somewhere, and this fall we aren't sweating if Mateo is pinch hitting for Frazier or vice versa because Mayo-Gunnar-Holliday-Basallo is the first string.

    • Loved seeing Eloy's enthusiasm at joining the team over the summer, but yeah it was way past time for this.  I didn't realize he still had options remaining, so I guess he's still around for a 'break glass in case of emergency' moment - hopefully he's done for the year though.  And declining the option is beyond a no-brainer, so that is in all likelihood it for Eloy as an O.
    • I've been fired up every day since my divorce hearing on 11/12/19. The third best day of my life. In all seriousness, life is good. Remember the 15 straight losing seasons? They're not perfect, but today is a new day and yesterday doesn't matter. Westburg, Urias, et. al. have returned, our BP is stronger and we have our best 3 SP set to go this series. We're 6-4 versus them this year, including taking 2/3 last time we were in NY. Pick your heads up a little bit. Will they win the WS? No, I don't think so. But guess what??! They've got a chance! I was at the game Sunday, and I'll be tuned in to every inning of the last 6 games. LFG.
    • I don't think there is any way to be a sport's fan and not require some form of therapy. For me, OH is my therapy center. If you invest any part of your being in a sport's team, there is no prescription for tranquility. You just have to come to a strategy that best allows you to follow your team. Mine for the most part is to walk away and turn it off. Wife gets mad at me because I won't keep watching a game when we are losing or playing poorly. Says I'm not a real fan. She's probably right but I don't view watching poor performance of any kind as a good use of time. I also don't get too much into second guessing or modern statistical analysis. Not interested in coulda - woulda - shoulda and though I am awed by all the data, it's just too much for me to digest and use. I let you all do that for me. If I think it's over the top I may say something but mostly enjoy the read. In this way, OH has helped me get through the down years and the good ones too. And it's also great in between.  So, in some fashion, we are all addicted to a game - a team. The trick is to remember this is entertainment - not life. And that can be hard. Now beat the Damn Yankees and make me feel better cause the way you've been playing is killing me 😄!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • This was the correct choice, glad to see them make it.
    • How about..." we wont win another game in the regular season"?
