Would you pitch Corbin Burnes 3/28, 4/2 and 4/7

The Orioles Ace while the rotation is short has the possibility to cover 3 of the first 9 games with the early off days.

I’m not in favor of overusing my ace early in the year.   I want him fresh in September.

He’s arguably the only bonafide major league starter in the rotation. No sense in wearing him out early.

Tendency might be to use him since it's only 1 year....but you need him fresh in October.  That's why you got him.

There are interesting pushes and pulls - a small investment now might result in the flexibility for more rest in September if the team is very successful.

Last year the Orioles more or less knowing what would happen burnt out Tyler Wells and I think they are about to do it again.    Post-trade deadline roster composition is just another universe.

With the rainout cushions, early season offdays are abundant if you think you might need or want 33 not 32 starts.

Here are some of Burnes days of rest readouts (4/5/6+) across his starting career - it is an especially interesting with him as I believe planned extra rest helped him achieve his Peak Pedro career year.    2021 was also the COVID + 1 year, so maybe that is what drove the Club doing 28 rather than 32-33 starts.

2021 - 2/17/9, the Pedro year

2022 - 15/15/3, even this year he achieved 33 starts, it wasn't until Memorial Day a 5th day between turns was discontinued*

2023 - 6/23/3

In both 2022 and 2023, Burnes faced about 20% more batters with only "normal human superstar" results.

Every 2024 inning above 200 Burnes can thrive in is another million above 200 Boras can negotiate for.     What will Burnes/Boras want to do day to day as the season rolls along?

*it was also in the June-September 2022 heavy use frame that he "failed in September" leading to the feel good arbitration process of 2023.

Really bad idea. He needs to get into a rhythm and have consistent rest. Over using him early is a recipe for injury. Get him on schedule to give the team 30+ starts and 200ish IP.

I do not think there is a GM in baseball that wouldn't consider Rodriguez and Kremer "bonafide major league starters".

Kremer has started 53 games over the last two seasons and put up a 3.74 ERA, if he isn't a bonafide major league starter than neither is John Means or the vast majority of starting pitchers in the league.

Yep, my terminology is certainly subjective. My intent was something along the lines of top of the rotation or close to it with a track record. Kremer could have a 3.50 or 5.00 ERA, neither will surprise me. Same goes for any one else currently in the rotation.

My point remains the same though, Burnes is the only one with a track record of success (should’ve just said that I guess).

How many starters in MLB have never had an ERA above 3.5?

Initial 20-ish responses it is about 2-1 against, and I am also a No this early.

Roster management wise, it would let Tyler Wells cool it in the bullpen a couple weeks if we are trying to get him to the finish line without a summer hiatus.

How much the Orioles will lean into their one year of Burnes will be interesting as the year goes along.    No pitcher in the world gets to do what Milwaukee CC Sabathia did anymore, but Elias having Burnes for 1 year is about as close to a perfect storm as there could be for a strong Club having short term access to a very strong Arm.

The AL East is serious competition.

maybe early on go somewhat easy but if they have no intentions on extending him then come summer i dont see the need for limits and preserving him to sign with the dodgers
