I admit it--I gave up

Recommended Posts

I was doing some work at the office on a Sunday, and after the homer I was so disgusted I turned the game off, but then peaked at ESPN a few minutes later and saw that we had not given up any more runs that inning. I said to myself if we come back in the bottom half there is no way I want to miss it, so turned it back on in time to see Stowers get a hit to start the inning. Glorious.

I was on the road and could only check the game when making a pit stop. The last pit stop coincided with Kimbrel blowing the save and I hit the road figuring the game was lost. It was great surprise to see the Orioles won it with a massive comeback just what the team needed a positive note going into the all star break.

I guess I have to turn in my fan card, because I turned off the TV after Kimbrel gave up the homer in the 9th today.   I didn't find out that they had rallied to win until two hours later.

Am I the only one?

No,but when I saw that they won, I did go back to the MLB app and rewind to see how they won. Does that count for anything.

I was at the game and have to say, not a lot of people left.  Many had bailed out in the middle innings due to the heat, but those who made it to the top of the 9th stayed for the bottom.   Including an extremely sizable Yankees contingent who went home VERY unhappy!   Boo hoo!

Just curious, was the ball hit by Mullins a totally catchable ball had Verdugo not misplayed it?  Watching at home when Mullins made contact, I said to myself this may have a chance. By the time the camera shifted to Verdugo, he had already come in and was stumbling to go back.

Definitely catchable, though not a routine play at all.

He totally misjudged it.  I had a very good view from 13 rows behind 1B.  I’ve already seen that the xBA on that hit (which doesn’t take direction into account) was only .150 based on EV and launch angle.  I’m planning to check catch probability in the morning when Verdugo’s chart populates, but I’d say that’s a 99% catch.

    • Pure uneducated speculation on my part, and injecting sloppy physics into the discussion. Wondering if when you're running your body is vertically lined up with your center of gravity. If you go into a head first slide your center of gravity hasn't changed, but now the front of your body extends out 2-3-4 feet in front of you. So if you time your slide correctly, you could reach the 1B bag faster depending on how well you time the slide and how much the ground slows you down.  Does that idea have any merit or am I full of soup?
    • Also, Vespi won’t have options next year.
    • Didn’t say he did. Was just listing people.
    • I am not sure that Irvin makes it through Sept on the 26 man roster.   If GRod, Eflin, Webb and Coulombe come back Elias will need to move some pitchers off the roster.    Since Irvin has no options left he will be DFA'd if they need his spot.   So he may not project into next year.
    • Watching Cowboy is a thesis in major league development. His on going adjustment to major league pitching. His growth in the outfield. Sure, he can frustrate at times but that is part of the process. What he does have all the time is hustle and a clear love of the game. I hope he has a long career and peaks as a perennial star. I think he has the makings! Kid is easy to root for.
    • We had a bullpen that had some good numbers but also some outlier numbers that didn’t project out well…as we have seen. Next year, the Os will have these guys making the league minimum: Gunnar, Holliday, Cowser, Westburg, Mayo, Kjerstad, GRod, Cano and Suarez  Bautista is signed for 1M next year, First year arb: Kremer, Adley and Bradish (not playing but still part of payroll)    That is 12 guys on the ML roster that are basically guarantees to be there unless they are hurt or traded. Those 12 guys will cost less than 20M. Thats almost half the roster. For those guys who we have control of or have gtd deals: Eflin: 18M Mullins: arb 3 (projected around 8-8.5M) Domínguez: 8M option OHearn: 7.5M option Mountcastle:  arb 2- 5.5-6.5M projection Mateo: arb 3- 3.5-4M projection  Urias: arb 2- 3.3-4M projection  Akin: arb 2- 2.2-3M projection  Rogers: arb 2- 2.5-3.5M projection  Tate: arb 3- 2-2.5M projection  Irvin: arb 2- 2.5-3M projection That is around another 65M if you keep everyone. This doesn’t count the BP pitchers I already listed above. Not many roster spots left and you have spent 85ishM.  Tons of resources left.    The goal of this offseason should be about run prevention. We need more of it.
    • I've noticed over the last few games how much better Cowser's throws seem to be, especially a few lasers to home plate.
