Watching it live you could see him slowing down as he pulled into 2nd... that's why I at least immediatley thought he could've made it if he stayed at full speed and slid in.

Like someone else said, you don't run through second. You have to slow before you get to second so you don't run through the bag... so sliding would've been the better thing to do.
