What's funny is, he could have actually made a sound argument if he had argued that because Dice-K didn't come throuhg in the post-season (which is a huge reason Boston brought him in), you could argue that he was a bust this year.

Instead he chose to attack people and fan flames.

Your blind defense of Matsuzaka really has no bounds. Face it Drungo. He was an average pitcher on a good team. That's all. Unfortunately, when someone disagrees with you you come at them tooth and nail. Since you won't let it die neither will I. Thus, Chollie strikes another blow to the infalability of Drungo. What's wrong with questioning a players ability who hadn't thrown a pitch in the majors, but was anointed by the national media(and defended by you no less)Cy Young winner, league MVP, and first ballot Hall of Famer? Remember that?

The vehement defense of this free agent signing(and only this free agent signing I might add) by a select few is quite curious. Why is that? Is it indeed a fact that there are closet Red Sox fans among us?

Say it ain't so!!!!!!!!!

He was better than average, he was 6.5 wins over replacement, and on the free agent market that's worth upwards of $13M a year.

You seem to be the only person who thinks the world had anointed Matsuzaka the next Walter Johnson and Sandy Koufax all rolled up into one. I seem to remember a pretty good debate this spring as to whether he was a 3.00-ish ERA pitcher, or more like a league average pitcher. Or maybe like most good pitchers (see Mike Mussina) a 3.00 ERA guy sometimes, a 4.00 sometimes, and worse than that once in a while.

My defense of the signing largely is a criticism of the Orioles' refusal to scout the Pacific Rim and/or do anything that's the least bit cutting-edge or risky. They'll talk a lot about not blowing the bank on an untested pitcher, but they have no problem spending large amounts of money on very tested, very mediocre players.

I don't get how if you don't think Dice-K wasn't the worst signing in the history of baseball, you're a closet Red Sox fan...

Being an Orioles fan means you can't say anything complimentary, or even objective, about the Red Sox or Yankees. You have to exaggerate their faults and flaws to make the Orioles seem less inept. For example, if you say that the Sox were smart in trading for Mike Lowell you're part of an evil cabal. Pretty simple, really.

Here let me ask the group. How many of you got a certain glee by hearing the primordial screams from the Boston fans after every single run-scoring hit in extra innings Saturday night?

I surely did. BTW, my glee was extended last night when Lofton hit that homer and then Dice-K didn't make it out of the 5th.

I also have some despair seeing die hard O's fans defending that signing with every fiber of their being.

The umpires hold secret meetings before all Yankee games to figure out how to screw the other team.

    • Well said he only bats lead off once. The lead off Home Runs are partially a product of him batting with nobody on base( pitchers more inclined to challenge) If they adjust the OBP will go up and so will the steals. As far as a fifth AB who else would you want up, plus whoever is PH for our # 8 or 9 has Gunner in front of them.
    • I would do both. Adley is 25 and looks like a Buster Posey kind of trajectory/career type. Obviously, by the back end of that deal (last 2-3 years) he will probably not be doing as much/the bulk of the catching (especially on a 10 year deal), to retain faces of your franchise/potential Hall of Fame players (at least Orioles hall of Famers), and maybe guys who one day get a statue out at the stadium is worth it to me. Especially considering how long it’s been since we had ANY. Ripken is the last one (over 20 years ago).  Gunnar is a no brainer IMO! He is 22 and already one of the best players in the sport. He may someday go down as the greatest player to ever wear an Orioles jersey. It is imperative IMO that you never let him walk out of the door (especially in his prime). IMO that would be franchise malpractice. It is extremely unlikely that you could find a player to replace him (be anywhere close to as good). He may be on pace for the greatest Orioles offensive season ever AND he’s only 22!
    • Mullins would be perfect for this if he would hit to his career average. Once Holliday comes up, start him and Mullins 8-9. Once Holliday hits, he can be the leadoff hitter of the future with Adley and Gunnar 2-3.  A 9-1-2 of Mullins-Holliday-Gunnar would be pretty nice.  I agree, Gunnar has to be 1 or 2. Every spot you move him down reduces his predicted AB's by 11% and we don't want that. Better to have him hit more times even if it costs a few base runners than more baserunners/fewer ABs.
    • Really well said and agree on all.  I too noticed the right leg almost always going to first base as he overswung (really I noticed it his first spring training game) compared to striding more straight towards the pitcher.
    • Since May 1 I have him 16 for 64.   .250.
    • If every major sport can have reply for impactful calls, then baseball needs to follow suit ASAP.  Yes, we can reply certain things in mlb, but the technology is there and it is being used in the minors with great success for strikes/balls. It makes 0 sense to keep letting awful calls by the umpire impact the outcome of games.
    • Now back to Gunnar, Gunnar is in the midst of most likely the greatest individual season in Orioles history. And we have 21/22 pages on him and what 80 on Holliday?
