The arrogance is what gets to me. After being sternly warned about this, he ignores some of the biggest legal poker houses in the world to play in an illegal game. These casinos have great action and celebrities are not uncommon so he wouldn't have necessarily stood out or drew undue attention. I just don't get it unless he thinks he is above the rules.

How MLB Dealt with Alex Rodriguez in regard to Steroids:

MLB: "Now Alex, we told you not to do that."

A-ROD: "Oh yeah, I forgot. My bad. Are you guys going to test me ???"

MLB: " No, Alex, we aren't going to test you ............ but you have to PROMISE that you aren't going to do steroids or HGH anymore."

A-ROD: "Oh, OK. I promise. Scout's honor."

MLB: "There's a good boy."

A-ROD: "Hey, anything I can do to help."

How MLB will Deal with Alex Rodriguez in regard to Gambling

MLB: "Now Alex, we told you not to do steroids, and you promised not to do them. Have you kept your promise, Ally ???"

A-ROD: "You bet, Mr. Selig. I'm strictly on the up-and-up."

MLB: "I knew we could count on you."

A-ROD: "Oh yeah, anytime you need anything Bud (Selig), just let me know and I'll see what I can do."

MLB: "Well, now that you mention it ....... there's this gambling thing that we try to steer clear of here at MLB. You know, with the whole Pete Rose thing more than 20 years ago, we really have to put our foot down and insist that none of our players gamble in any way."

A-ROD: " So, what exactly are you asking me ???"

MLB: "Well ....... I don't want to step on your toes or anything Alex ........."

A-ROD: "Awww come on, Bud. Spit it out. What can I do for you ???"

(Selig is trembling with anxiety, hoping that Rodriguez will be agreeable to his new request).

MLB: "Ehhh ....... well, would you mind going on Sportscenter and making a statement that you will not gamble as long as you are an active player" ???

A-ROD: "No sweat, Bud. You know me. If it helps the game, I'll tell a li ...... ehhh, I mean, I'll put the record straight."

(Selig has a huge smile of relief on his face, and he engages Rodriguez in a loving embrace between the superstar and the commissioner).

In 2005, Rodriguez had been warned about gambling in underground poker clubs by the Yankees and by baseball commissioner Bud Selig, both of whom were concerned that possible involvement with gamblers who might be betting on baseball games could result in a Pete Rose-type lifetime ban from baseball.

This is the real problem. He's been told to avoid them, and still did it anyways.

Particularly when you consider there are several world class card rooms within a 20 min. drive that would have been in compliance with MLB and Yankee requests.

Consorting with known gamblers has long been a no no within baseball.

Chalk me up as someone who doesn't understand the big deal here. Now if they were gambling on baseball in his presence, that might be one thing. But "gambling" is a pretty big umbrella. If A-Rod goes to the track and hangs with a bunch of people gambling on horses, what's the big deal?

Interesting that they threw that tidbit about cocaine in there. I'm willing to bet it's not the first time a superstar athlete has been in the presence of it, I'm not sure how it adds to the report...other than making the reader think that A-Rod was hanging with some nefarious people.

But gambling on baseball is ok if it's Shirley Johnson from Severna Park, MD and Jim Hunter is telling us that she gets $1,000 for ever double play by the Orioles or $5,000 for every triple play because she won some state-sponsored lottery. ;)

It all goes back to the black Sox. They don't want players beholden to gamblers for fear that "point shaving" or outright fixing of games could result. Or for that matter just passing along of useful information like Rose did with his betting patterns.
