So, we have no depth and lack in talent.

Yet he wants to build around our core and as part of that core, we have one player who is a FA in 2 years.

That player can bring us back a lot and as of right now, you have no idea if he wants to extend or, if he does, how much it will take.

Yet, you want to build around that player?

You have no depth and very little talent and he is a FA in 2 years...How in the world do you build around a guy that is leaving in 2 years when you have no talent surrounding him?

Someone please, tell me how that logic makes any sense.

Buck has two years as well.

I like that as well. :)

I actually consider myself to be one of the more "optimistic" posters concerning our chances of signing him. And I'd put those chances at around 5%.

We certainly have the resources. I think he'll get a handful of similar gigantic deal offers. He'll ultimately have to pick where he wants to go win some rings. If we want him, we're going to have to get extra stupid with the checkbook.

I wonder what the reaction of the Hangout would be after learning we've signed Prince Fielder to a 8yr/$184m ($23m per) deal? I'd be completely and utterly shocked, but very excited.

"Yay, we got our Jayson Werth!"

I'd be excited to see him play for us, and then I'd agree with the national consensus that we would have overpaid to jump from 75 to 80 wins.

Prince Fielder is a hell of lot better than Jayson Werth. If we did this we may win only 75-80 games next year but we'd also have a young superstar to build around long term.

The Orioles need to do something. Soon people have to put a deposit on their season tickets(in a week).I know the Sales Department is getting alot of negative calls. The O's are one of the few teams who have not traded for or signed a player who played more then a month in the majors. All the players the O's have aquired played about a month in the majors last year.

I gotta admit, so would I. I would be frightened to make that commitment, but I would love the idea of Fielder's bat in the 4-hole.

I would be shocked that the Orioles went that high AND that Fielder accepted. Then I'd be really happy that we are finally making a splash. Then I'd realize our pitching still sucks and we're still destined for last place, and I'd go back to wondering what the next move will be.

And finally, I'd realize that my pal Trea is sticking around, and I'd do a Happy Happy Joy Joy dance!

I would cringe and lament that my team remains the laughingstock of baseball.

This.

SammyBirdland, if you're taking requests, my original intent for this post was to make a joke about also wanting to stock up on bottled water and canned goods (i.e., Fielder would cause some kind of food shortage), but it just doesn't work without an image...I was thinking Fielder superimposed on Godzilla's body, marching on Baltimore.

You know, if you ever have a few spare moments.

I would be looking forward to the next several moves that will happen in the next 12 months because if they don't do something quickly, the contract will become an albatross quickly.

    • JD Martinez would be a more of the same kind of acquisition. He is not an impact bat and he is a periphery (around the margins) piece at this point. Why not set the bar higher and sign Alonso? Acquiring Pete Alonso allows you to move on from Mountcastle and put Mayo (where he belongs right now) DH. It also allows you to move on from O'Hearn.  Alonso gets everyday ABs and Mayo does. Those two things to a large degree help solve the lineup imbalance against LHP. I know Alonso will cost real money. But again who are we paying? The money is there. It's time to start using it (if we want to win in October).
    • Your full quote said to use him as a DH for 100+ games. If you are worried about him being covered through his injuries - how can you assume he wouldn't be injured at the end of the season, going into the playoffs?
    • Here’s an exercise… it’s the postseason and the bases are loaded. The Santa scenario. Who on our current roster would you rather have up over JD Martinez?  Same fact pattern as Santander’s AB.
    • I think the title of this thread told you his status
    • Why did you pare down my quote about it being for the post season and not just 162?  People, always so quick to clown someone. Lmao. Damn. At least use my whole quote bro.  If you think that we don’t need at least one proven playoff bat then that’s ok. My point is, that we have enough 1B/DH options to carry JD through his ups/downs/injuries over 162 for his experience, leadership, and playoff experience.  You can disagree, but quote me right.
    • It's kind of amazing to me how no one knows Suarez's free agent status. I've heard it both ways. He's Schrodinger's baseball player.
    • Since JD Martinez has a career OPS of .950 in the postseason across 12 series and 151 plate appearances, I am sure our FO will have no use for him.  A veteran player who has experienced a lot of postseason success rarely helps young teams get to that next level.
