I winder if all this "we're open to trading Wieters" stuff is the Orioles way of lighting a fire under Matt's ass? If Matt truly wants to hit free agency, he HAS TO know that his .220 BA and under .300 OBP isn't gonna garner his the contract he is seeking, right?

Amazing they would need to clear salary to sign a FA. They won't do anything this winter of significance. Just planting the seeds and setting fans up with the budget restrictions.

I hope so... it's worked with certain players before. It would be awesome to see him come out and hit .280/.320/.490 with 30 homers just to prove he has the talent everyone says he had all along.

...or he could just shrivel up and demand a trade mid season. These things can definitely backfire. Badly.

It is ridiculous. We should be able to add one significant player without "breaking the bank".

Now...I'm not against trading Wieters. But, I would not be for trading Wieters just to clear salary.

But, that 10M is going to be allocated to JJ, Davis, and Wieters pretty quickly.

That being said (said this in the other Beltran thread), we should be able to afford one significant player without shedding salary.

We already knew they had to clear salary if they wanted to go shopping. Supposedly, we weren't willing to do that.

Showalter was reminded that the Orioles have not spent big in free agency in recent winters and some fans have questioned that decision.

"At what price? At the expense of not having (Matt) Wieters or (J.J.) Hardy or (Chris) Davis or (Nick) Markakis. At what price? I like our guys and don't covet other people's players.
