Did you really just compare Ichiro to David Lough? Have mercy.

Ichiro put up a .262/.297/.342/.639 line last season. In 555 PA. In a park suited for LHH. At this point in their careers Lough is clearly better. But I believe Hoosier's point was that every team, even in the AL East, has a guy on their roster that puts up numbers like that.

Lough could be a huge improvement to our team, but Dan Duquette only acquired him. It's up to Buck to put him in the line-up and find a role where he can succeed. Maybe that's our starting LF, or maybe a bench role. I really don't understand how you can complain about adding talent to this organization - it's not as though Buck will play him sink or swim.

I think they are spending Christmas together.

David Lough looks plenty buff already …

You have to hate the deal because the Orioles did it, they made a move that wasn't signing Choo for Elevnty Million dollars! It doesn't matter how "logical," or "good," the move is; all that matter is that the Orioles did it and therefore i must hate it.

Also, Peter Angelos because there.

Hah! Exactly. Player value is measured only by the contract they receive! That's what makes it so easy to determine who the best players in baseball are. Just sort descending by salary and there you have it. Your key to success.

I simply don't understand all the hate. This kid had THE BEST WAR for rookies last year. I'm not a big WAR guy simply because I don't fully understand what all determines the number, but that is impressive. Why is there such concern for him not being a big bopper? Do we no longer have the silver slugger SS, the HR champion and Jones on our team any longer?

I like the deal.

I like this trade. Lough is probably never going to walk much or hit for much power, but his batting average will keep his offensive numbers respectable, and his defense is outstanding. He doesn't have a platoon split, so he can play every day in LF. Hopefully the team will "reallocate" some of the money saved on having Lough instead of McLouth in LF towards signing a better starting pitcher or a stronger bat for DH.

Valencia had a good season for the O's, but if the O's want a RH platoon DH they have other options (Pearce, Reimold).

Considering how bad the internal options and FA options were at LF, I give DD a lot of credit for finding a player capable of league-average production or better at LF that doesn't cost much in the way of dollars or prospects.

The Orioles just traded a bench player/ platoon/emergency guy for a young, toolsy, left-fielder, who finished in the top 8 of the ROY balloting last year.

And people are genuinely upset about this?

I mean I'm not going to set off fireworks over this - but this is a good move. This is objectively a good move. There is no logical metric you can use to come to the conclusion that this is a bad move.

    • If it wasn't for the awkwardness with Hays (who isn't going to be traded) I'd be all about adding Taylor Ward as our 3rd/4th OF who can play good defense and crush lefties from the RH. I don't think the Orioles will rock the boat this season though. Maybe trade him in the offseason?

Of course most of these are from 19th century or Negro leagues that played shorter schedules. Also, this year because the season is only half over. I love that Mule Suttles had 130 RBI in 89 games in 1926. That's 237 per 162 games. And Ross Barnes' '76 runs scored total extrapolated out to 162 is 309.
    • True. Hays' value in a trade for pitching would be as an add-on to a good or really good prospect(s).
    • It would be great to see Stroman join his fellow starters Cole, Gil and Rodon in the "One bad start or there a problem here?" club.  The NYYs' in the last week is 7.50 (29th in MLB). For June, it's 5.27 (28th in MLB). I wonder, among other things, whether looking at that pitching staff and at the bottom five in the NYYs' batting order will have an impact on Soto's decision about where to spend the rest of his career.
    • Have not been thrilled with Hays this year, but to be fair he has dealt with a lot of injuries and illnesses. That even said, trading a RH OF bat when we are already very short on them to begin with, including in the minors? Yep makes total sense. 🤦‍♂️
    • This is a possibility. The Orioles don't lack in outfield depth and Mullins has rebounded securing his role as the starting CF. Also Hays' defense has dropped off and the value he used to provide defensively is now largely gone. Plus Cowser even if he isn't hitting recently has been a plus defender in the outfield. I don't see anything happening with Hays this season. The value returned in trading him isn't worth not having him as a backup option for LF/RF.
    • He's hit the top of some walls this year so I think there's been a little bad luck.  If he had around 14 HRs we wouldn't think anything of it.  I share yours, and his, frustration though.  I thought that first ball was a HR last night.  The double that McCann couldn't score on a couple games ago looked like a HR off the bat, too.  Seems to me like he's hitting a lot of ground balls, too. I love the guy, and I know offense is down and his deeper stats look good, but I feel like his .786 OPS is disappointing.  Good/great team guy and defensive 1B?  Yes.  Lots of HHBs?  Yes.  So, I guess we can ignore some of his more traditional stats but I also feel like we're saying that every year and this is his age 27 season.  Maybe he'll hit two bombs tonight, get his OPS to .820 and we can laugh about this tomorrow.
