Ervin Santana now seeking a one-year deal (Braves close to a deal)

I guess I'm sentimental on MiGo and Chen. I just don't see Ervin as an upgrade. MO. :noidea:

I think we all like Gonzo and Chen, and I don't think a Santana signing really has any immediate affect on them. I think Santana is a better fit in the ballpark than Norris, and has a higher upside, particularly if he's playing for a contract again. My opinion, of course. It's ok to disagree.

It should be clear though, that if Santana can take all of the changes he made last year and continue them this year to similar results, than he definitely would be an upgrade.

They don't lose one of their picks. They would lose the pick that they could GAIN if he signed anywhere else. This is from yesterday afternoon. They knew about Hochevar last week.

He was shut down for a couple of days last week. The Tommy John Surgery was announced yesterday.

Maybe the quote is true, or maybe he's posturing. Tough to see why they wouldn't want him. We'll see what happens.

He was shut down through May last week, if we want to be accurate. He decided to just go ahead with the TJ though so he can be ready for whomever he pitches for in 2015.

I think Hochevar was probably not the favorite for their rotation spot, anyway. Like Matusz and Hunter for us, he really found himself in the bullpen last year, and I think he was likely to return there with Duffy or Ventura getting the last spot in their rotation.

Not really a fan of the "sign Ervin/trade Bud" idea; I'd rather have 2 years of Norris than 1 year of Santana. I think that in the AL East and its tiny, HR friendly parks, Santana is less of an upgrade over Bud than a lot of people believe.

That's why he wants to sign with a high power offensive team; to make his mistakes less costly.

Just a guess, but maybe he's equating run support with W's and then equating W's with $'s for his next deal.

I think this is more than a guess. GMs still overpay for pitchers with strong W-L records and you get those by playing for teams that can give you run support.

I think you're living in the past more than most GMs. ;)

With the 4 year demand out the window a lot of teams may become interested again.

If wants a deal ASAP, my guess is he ends up with one of the teams that has been in for a while. Just a guess, though. Giving up a 1st rounder for 1 year of Santana will still keep a lot of teams away. The ones with protected first rounders, or who have already given up their first rounder (Toronto, Baltimore, New York to name a few) are probably more likely.

    • Exactly. My friend was arguing with me to see the Phillies prices. I said the Phillies have 35,000 fans and 250 million dollar payroll. Also they have 150 million dollars committed to next years roster. My argument is that we should be playing to who we are. We should not be cancelling the top left upper deck seats pre game instead of offering them for 5$ for students, kids, first responders, teachers. My son is 2 years old and may watch the game for 2-3 innings before walking around. Why would I want to get a expensive ticket.
    • It’s dangerous to extrapolate much from one series.  If the Yankees stay healthy they’ll win 90+ games and force us to get to the high 90’s if we want to win the division.   Their starting pitching is decent and their bullpen as always is very good.  Death, taxes and a good Yankee bullpen.   The offense wasn’t scary and we’ll see if it stays that way.  I think Torres is a big key to their season.  He’s at .569 OPS and at 27 years old there’s no reason he should suddenly be taking a 200 point OPS dive.  If he gets back to normal and Judge heats up, they’re suddenly much more dangerous on offense.   I’m glad we took 3 of 4 and finished the series in first place, but there’s miles to go and the season will take many twists and turns.
    • Yea I could see the Yankees being dangerous in a series if Soto and Judge are hot and Cole is back pitching like he can.  That bullpen is tough if they have a lead. But they need a lot to go right imo. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if they missed the playoffs although I would pencil them in as of today.
    • You rightly listed ahead of Povich the guy that is probably closest to him--Coloumbe.  Coloumbe is an excellent reliever. Zimmerman was never talked up by management like Povich.  Zimmerman was never a top 100 prospect on any prospect list like Povich.  Zimmerman and Povich are currently on the same team and one is clearly superior to the other.
    • Mayo could DH versus LH SP, and play some 3rd va RHP. Ramon could enter in late as a defensive sub. That’s an everyday role with 1 off day a week.
    • I'll forgive him for both if he can keep pitching the way he has. Baker? you will probably see him this Summer in a Shuttle move or 2 to eat non leveraged innings, hopefully not in October.
