25 .

As of right now, 25 is the answer to the following question:

How many wins will it take for the Orioles to be guaranteed division winners?

It is NOT the answer to this question: What is the Orioles' magic number?

If you don't know what the difference is between those two questions, let's try to get a definition of magic number:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_number_(sports)

The magic number is calculated as G + 1 − WA − LB, where

G is the total number of games in the season

WA is the number of wins that Team A has in the season

LB is the number of losses that Team B has in the season

In this case, the Orioles are Team A, because they are the division leader, and the Yankees are Team B because they are the second place team in the division.

G (Games in MLB season) = 162

WA (Orioles wins) = 75

LB (Yankees losses) = 62

Therefore the magic number for the Orioles is: 162 + 1 - 75 - 62 = 26.

To put it in plain English:

Any combination of wins by Team A and losses by Team B totaling to [the magic number] makes it impossible for Team B to win the division title.

Winning 25 games means the Yankees must by default lose at least 1 game, and therefore we will win the division, and thus the Magic Number of 26 is satisfied by 25 Orioles wins + 1 Yankees loss.

Magic Numbers: Determine the number of games yet to be played, add one, then subtract the number of games ahead in the loss column of the standings from the closest opponent.

Source

O's have 32 games left to play

+ 1 = 33

33 - 7 (55 losses for us, 62 losses for the Yanks = 7 in the loss column)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

26 is the Magic Number
