Report: Phillies offered Howard, Byrd to Orioles

Meh, a more charitable interpretation is just that they are rebuilding and it makes sense to trade him for prospects. I agree Amaro is an idiot for a million other reasons but this just seems like an awkward quote taken out of context. I think guys understand that if they are traded for prospects it does not necessarily reflect poorly on them.

Orioles, one of nine clubs able to trade with Phillies for Ryan Howard.

Geographical proximity to Philly?

I might take a flier on Howard if the Phils ate essentially his entire contract (except maybe a $million or two) and only asked for a token organizational guy in return. There's some chance he could bounce back and be a semi-decent strict-platoon DH and emergency first baseman. Kind of a lefty, first base version of Delmon.

(Strained metaphor alert) It's like if someone offered you a 1997 Porsche Boxter with 188,000 miles, a huge dent in the side and a seized engine for $100. If your wife let you, you just might do it. You'd probably let it sit in the driveway for six months then get sick of looking at it and sell it on Craigslist for nothing. But maybe, just maybe, you might get motivated and have some fun with it.

Well the '97 Boxster is listed at 2,756 pounds. That means it is worth about $225 for scrap. I would probably just scrap it and make a quick hundred. ;)

I'd also scrap Howard if that was an option.

Holy poop on a stick batman!

BBREF

2015 35 Philadelphia Phillies $25,000,000 9.145

2016 36 Philadelphia Phillies $25,000,000

2017 37 Philadelphia Phillies *$23,000,000 $23M Team Option, $10M Buyout

Earliest Free Agent: 2017

Career to date (may be incomplete) $130,255,000 Does not include future salaries ($50M)

$10 million dollar buyout! He is owed $60 MILLION guaranteed over the next 3 years.

Entering his age 35 season.

Average OPS over the last 3 years (start of his decline to now) is .720.

For the WAR heads, that is -1.5 WAR over 3 years. oWAR of 0.2 dWAR of -1.3.

He isn't even a worthy DH at this point.

Well, maybe he can platoon? Not clear. Terrible last year vs RHP. Actually better vs LHP. 2012-2013 he did have platoon numbers but less then half a year of PA's each year.

This guy is the definition of overpaid old fart knocker.

Just say NO!

This piece increased my opinion of Howard, specifically the miniscule pop-up rate I never would have guessed.

I know he's a shell of his former self and one of the worst overpays ever. But I wouldn't hate having him at $2 million/season next year to see if he takes to DH. I call SSS on his weird platoon split last year, and know that before he was a career-long RHP killer.

Rasmus is the best fit, but if we miss him, I think I'd rather roster Howard than Aoki or Ichiro.

I tend to agree, but that's totally based on the Phils eating about $57M and only asking for a non-prospect in return. You're rolling the dice on a bounceback season from a one-dimensional 35-year-old. On the open market he'd get a 1/2 kind of deal.

They will pick it up here as is within two hours and give me a check for 500.

He's owed $50MM over the next 2 years with a $10MM buyout in 2017 = $60MM.

If we could get them to eat 40-50% of that contract and give up Norris / B prospects. I would entertain it. He could bounce back as a solid FT DH as well as another LH power bat with Davis.

I am not really good with coming up with trade proposals so don't troll on me but I think pretty much all of MLB knows he cannot play 1B anymore and would be more suited to be a DH.

Have a nice day.

No way I'd even begin to entertain paying that much for Howard. It would have to be Phils eat all but a few $million and expect almost nothing back (C prospect at best). This is a 35-year-old who's been worth 1.5 wins over the last five years combined! If it wasn't for his contract he might have retired several years ago.
