Sun: Cubs Offer Ceden, Gallagher, Veal and maybe a 4th player - For Roberts

Apologies if this has already been posted, I just read the last page. There are several rumblings on Cubs message boards that the Cubs are extremely close to a deal for Crisp (with a likely package of Marquis and Fuld going to Boston). Crisp plays CF and is griping about being a starter in Boston (which would obviously continue in Chicago). Right now Pie is scheduled to be the Cubs starting CF, and has proven all that he can prove in AAA......where is Pie going to play this year? Could it be CF in Camden Yards?

Just stirring the pot.

Seems far more likely that the Sox want Marquis as insurance with Beckett's injury, and the Cubs want Crisp to be that versatile 4th OF they've been after all offseason.

Usually the simplest explanation is the correct one.

But its not that simple. Crisp wants to be a starter. He has caused enough of a distrubance with the Red Sox that they are ready and willing to trade him. How happy is he going to be backing up another young CF in Chicago?

As for the Cubs side, it would be horrible to push Murton even further from the mix as he has hit well everytime he has had consistant ABs in the bigs.

Marquis wants to be a starter too.

The Cubs are going to have a less-than-happy player on their hands either way.

At least Crisp is cheaper and fills a role. Marquis in the bullpen would be a much worse situation.

They probably want Crisp to be more then JUST a fourth outfielder; he would be the insurance against growing pains from Pie.

With a team that is going for the ring now, as shown by the obsession with Brian Roberts, they don't want to take the risk of Pie being Corey Patterson in 2002, putting up a .676 OPS when they need better from as many positions as possible.

Dave, why is there such a question about Marquis being in the rotation? He has proven he can eat innings and he wins his share. Lieber, Marshall and Dempster really are not as likely to put up 200 innings the way Marquis is likely to do.

The sad thing is that even if we do trade BRob, these long redundant threads on BRob won't stop.

We will only see more of them in all likelihood, complaining about the trade, about who we got in return, etc.

Condemned to endless BRob threads that go on and on and on and on in one form or another.

Oh gawd.......

The Cubs have 4 guys for 2 slots. Obviously two guys are going to lose out.

Right now it looks like Marquis will be one of those two. Lou lost faith in him late last year, and now this spring Marquis has further endeared himself with his blabbing to the media with his start-me-or-trade-me rant.

Further exacerbating the situation is that Marquis earns more $$$ than any of the other three guys.

The writing's just all up and down the wall on this one. If the Cubs could move Marquis for something with even modest value like Crisp, they'd do it in a second and just close the book on the whole Marquis situation.

Based on what projection?

Leiber is 38 and did not get close to 200 IP last year. The older a pitcher gets, the hard it is to do.

Dempster has not started since 2003 and was terrible then with an ERA over 6.00.

Marshall - well to start with Pineilli doesn't like young guys. Has not started him yet this spring. And, of course, he has never gone 200 innings.

On the other hand, Marquis has averaged 195 IP over the last 4 years.

Is that enough?

I agree he is more versatile than Demp and Lieber. Lieber is coming off of a foot injury. Demp in 2003 had a serious arm injury. We signed him rehabbed him and then put him in the pen.

Lieber and Demp have better stuff. I think that Lou thinks that if not getting innings out of Demp and Lieber is the issue he has enough depth with either a Marquis, Marshall, Gallagher, etc...

I think one of the two (Lieber or Demp) will have very solid seasons. If both do it could be a really fun year.

Marshall will probably be a long guy in the pen due to having two other lefties in the rotation.
