There's some speculation that the shadows are making it hard to pick up the ball from the pitcher.

That seems to often be the case in these late afternoon games. In this game, there are a lot of shadows from the light towers. The ball actually comes out of the shadows and goes back into the shadows before arriving at home plate.

It's always somewhat easier because it's a shorter throw. However you have to be sure you're going to be able to get the runner. The more sure play is at first in almost every case because the batter doesn't move to first as fast as a runner who was leading off first gets to second. If it's close, you have to go to first unless there's some really pressing reason not to.

That is why I said that you rarely see a runner safe at second when they are doing that play to end the inning. The infielders know when they can throw to 2nd and when they can't.

It is up to the fielder in every situation, and MLers hardly make the wrong decision when it comes to this play.

Funny how much BRob got bashed for the play last year where Tejada didn't bother to cover, even though the runner would have been out very easily if Tejada had done his job. Anyway the play by Mora today was lazy. The runner was at second before the ball got there. He got a lucky call from the umpire, but it's not good policy to go around assuming that the umpire is going to give you a break you haven't really earned.

Man, you can tell the Os are off to a good start when the only thing we can argue about is a play where they ended up getting the guy out anyhow!
