Matthew Grimes Carolina League player of the Week

I wouldn't get excited until he starts pitching the same at AA. Means has pitched well at AA but his strikeouts are way down so far.

Seems to me like we have a fair amount of Tyler Wilson-level talent sprinkled around the minors. I'd put Lee, Hess, Means and Grimes potentially in that category. They may not be as good as Wilson (too soon to know), but they have similar back-of-rotation ceilings, I think.

Lee has back of the rotation upside?

Grimes had to record 15 outs in 4.67 innings, due to a runner reaching safely on a dropped 3rd strike.

It was Grimes' career debut at the AA level.

I was at Grimes outing yesterday and I agree. He has nothing left to prove at this level. His command was excellent throughout his outing.

Two seam fastball was 89-90 MPH. Four seam sat 91-92 MPH, occasionally bumping 93-94 MPH. He mixes in a 12-6 curveball that clocks in the mid 70's, a low 80's changeup and an occasional 82-84 MPH slider.

His 6'5", 185 pound build and pitching delivery mirror that of Chris Tillman. Not that I'm comparing the two but his delivery is very similar to Tillman's and like Tillman I think his fastball plays up a little due to the downward plane he gets from his overhand release. His offspeed pitches didn't wow me but he generally threw strikes with them and snapped off a couple curveballs for strikeouts that I would grade as major league average.

He's another guy like John Means that impresses me with his feel for mixing pitches and throwing them consistently for strikes. Also, like Means, I'm not sure how his stuff will play at higher levels but I think it's time to find out.

There might an argument to be made that he's the best SP prospect we have. Above is a pretty good scouting report. There was another thread where a guy mentioned that his stuff really took an upswing this year. Can't remember which thread though.

Our SP prospects have really not had a good season, probably because they aren't that good of prospects. But things looked better a little bit ago then,

Hess is struggling at AA.

Lee is hurt.

Fenter and Bridwell are hurt too. Now so is Harvey.

Nobody is really pitching well after being promoted.

Lots of meh

Peralta, B.Gonzalez, Barker and Gunkel are the bright spots. Grimes might not best prospect but he's sneaking up there.

I mentioned it. His velocity has gone up, now hitting 92-94 consistently while touching 95 whereas last year he was more upper 80's while hitting 90. With solid velocity and his good secondaries, he should be a #3/#4 type starter imo. Just hope he can continue.

He seems to be adjusting to AA pretty well.

Seems like he is finally over that injury and showing why he was a 4th rd pick out of high school. Here is an interesting read...

Rajsich said he and Bonilla were the two hardest throwers drafted in 2014. Had TJ surgery 2012.

5 shutout innings, then he ceded 2 runs in the 6th.

Much better control than in his previous outing ...... only 1 walk, and a 2-to-1 strikes-to-balls ratio.

4 walks in only 5 innings pitched.

Very bad Strikes-to-Balls ratio.

The opposing team also stole 5 bases in the 5 innings in which Grimes was in the game, without getting thrown out once.
