At this juncture (and I never thought I'd "hear" my self say this) I'd say it's quite possible.

McCoy has a better hit tool, less defensive ability at SS, but he'll need to be 100% fully ready if he's going to have a chance to succeed in the majors. I'd give him a full season's worth of ABs in AAA, he doesn't have a 40 man crunch because he was a 2017 pick. 

You also have to take into consideration that Martin played in a hitter's friendly Texas League while McCoy is playing in the pitcher's friendly Easter League.

McCoy's emergence has been one of the best stories of the season. While I'm not convinced yet he's an everyday SS in the major leagues, I'm also not discounting it either.

Highest batting average in all of the Eastern League at .319 .   Second in OBP at .390!

7th best OPS in the league at .808.

He has played a lot more in Bowie now than he did in Frederick to start the year.

They just called up Clare a few days ago. I imagine if they intended to call McCoy up this year they would have done it then.

Baltimore Sun Mason McCoy

Good article in the Sun today about Mason McCoy.

 

McCoy also has an approach that’s tailored perfectly to the defensive shifts that have taken over even the minor leagues. McCoy said he was a “pull-hitter only” in high school and college, and found he hit into the shift often at Delmarva.

McCoy told himself: " ‘Man, I’ve really got to focus on this, because everyone’s got to pound me away. If I could just flick a ball over there and take my hit, it’s fine. It’s a hit. I’m getting on base, and we’ve got the big guys up in the lineup who are hitting me in.

“I focused big time on that this offseason by trying to just work with the tee around, tosses around, and when I get up to bat, I look at the defense and see where everyone’s at. ... Legitimately, I just try to hit the ball where they aren’t playing.”

It might not have been who McCoy was when he was starring at Iowa, but he’s found it’s helping him immensely now. According to FanGraphs, he went the other way on 44% of his batted balls at Frederick and 45.1% for Bowie, up from 35.6% a year ago. By comparison, the highest opposite-field rate among qualifiers in the big leagues is Miguel Rojas of the Miami Marlins at 33.7%.

Was just coming here to post the Sun article.  Glad to see it was done already.

Pretty cool to go from having essentially 0 middle infield prospects to start the year to having the best hitter in the Eastern League playing for us at SS.

But that approach won't give him much power, so I expect to read soon (on here) that he'll never be a regular with the Orioles.

Huge OBP plays.  I dont know how his defense is like but if he can play decent Shortstop he can stick.
