I would like to think that the generality of this is accurate while being factually misleading.  I think all of us understand that we are not going to win for at least several years and we should expect to see lower payroll and lower investments into ML roster. However, even if there are no additions say to the rotation or for defensive specialists...there is no question that investments will be needed in infrastructure or turning around a franchise that is behind virtually everywhere except in the stadium it plays in.  Spending nothing and acquiring little?   I think overall this is unworkable and will prove untrue.  We'll see.  There is much to be done. and simply reducing overhead will not fix the mess.  Investments will be made or the madness will continue.  IMHO.

If Elias follows the Houston Plan then:

The focus will be on making the playoffs in 2022 and the WS soon there after.

O's Major League Players with  value will be traded for players 23 years old and younger including Bundy, Cobb,  Cashner, Given, Bleier, Kline, Mancini, Trumbo no matter if the O's have major league replacements or not. This will happen over the next year.

Beckham and Caleb will be non tendered

There will be a lot of investment in scouting, player development and analytics

I think there is a chance that Hays and Diaz will be kept in the minors  at least until next year to delay their service clock progressing.  They are probably seen as part of the 2022 playoff team.

As players are traded away players from the minors will be promoted to give them a chance to show they can play at the major league level.

The 2020 O's major league payroll will be in the 50 million range.

I can't say how closely Elias will follow this kind of plan but that is what Houston did.

I started a similar post, but you hit in on the head. Well done.

Yes, I agree with this, but weams' post was generically stating that we are going to suck and spend no money.  I think investments will be made, we just may not see anything significant as a result of that on the field of play.  I am holding the overall reaction until we have an announcement, but I was honestly preparing for much worse news.

I think he was referring to the major league payroll, not other kinds of spending.

I'd prefer the thread title be changed until it's official... if that's cool.

“Orioles wait for Mike Elias to decide if he really wants to be their general manager”

Seriously though the longer this goes the more worried I get. I keep thinking of the Josh McDaniels fiasco with the Colts last off season. They had an agreement of sorts, the team announced it, then McDaniels had a “sudden change of heart” and went back to New England. The colts looked absolutely awful for making an official announcement before it was official and I’m thinking that we haven’t made an announcement yet because it isn’t official.

Houston payback for Z Britton trade debacle.

Agree with most, but I don't think there's a good reason to delay service time for either of Hays or Diaz.  They are not Acuna, Jiminez or Vlad Jr.  If they're ready, bring them up.

Neither one has shown he’s ready IMO.    But it might only take a few months to prove otherwise.

That's what I'm worried about. Mike E. should've never been announced as the O's GM untill he signes on the dotted line.

He was never announced by the Orioles,

It was leaked by a national sports media guy and from the Astros side of the house, it would appear to have come from.

I’m not worried about the fact that it hasn’t been officially announced yet.  Bob Nightengale was clearly told by someone in Elias’ or the Astros camp that he was the Orioles pick for GM, and he ran with it, and it has since been confirmed by other sources.  I’m sure the delay is simply negotiating the contract once Elias was informed he got the job, and the fact that John & Lou are at the Owners Meetings, followed by the MASN panel hearing.  It just happens to be a hectic time right now.  I would expect that if it’s not announced today, it will be tomorrow.  Everyone likes to joke about it, but at least we know Elias won’t need to take a physical, so that has nothing to do with the delay.  Probably just a matter of dotting i’s and crossing t’s, getting all the plans in order for the press conference, etc.  At this point, I’m not going to worry about anything until it becomes clear there is something to worry about.
