3/5 of the Rotation Today?

I think Wright will probably make his scheduled start. He only threw one inning.

Hess threw like 45 pitches so I doubt he'll make his.  Kinda wished he would have started today.  His stuff was actually playing against the Yankee lineup unlike Cashner.

Maybe Means but he seems like the logical choice to follow Karns Saturday.

Hyde after the game interviewed by Gary Thorn said he's in good shape. Said Hess will start "in a few days." Assuming he meant Monday. Yesterday was like a bullpen for him.

Rotation?  Haha. I think Cobb and Bundy will be our only two SP going over 4-5 IP. Cashner will against weaker teams. Other than we’re just covering innings.

We’re going to use “openers”, but not like the way TB did. We have to just call our SP that because we know they can got 3+ IP.

If there ever was a year to see what Castro could do. How many meaningful IP will be and Givens even get?

Why is Wright on this team?  We know what he can do. Come in and nibble and walk the stadium. I know he’s here early on until guys in AAA can get stretched out but the dude is the same old terrible.

Largely agree with much of this. This thing is going to be highly unorthodox this year, with a few starters, a few openers, and a lot of mixing and matching throughout the middle innings to get by with guys that can give us 2-3 inning stints. Going to be a bit of a struggle, but will be interesting, if nothing else, to see us cover a LOT of mop up innings.

This, as we all know, will not be a fun year.

Did we go through 3/5 of the current rotation today?

Cashner, Wright and Hess?

Who else is in the rotation? Bundy and...?

Who starts games four and five?

What happens game two after the opener?

What about if Bundy sucks?

Whatever happens will happen.

Can't wait to see what happens. Our starters are garbage so we have nothing to lose. I am curious as to what Hyde thinks is the upside of using starters' "bullpen sessions" in actual games. Maybe the idea is to keep anyone from having to go a third time through the order? Cashner had only thrown 75 pitches but going to Wright/Hess allowed him to exit at batter no. 20.

    • You said Ortiz was in the range of Basallo. That’s completely laughable.  They aren’t even close.    Bradfield has been in the range of Ortiz, as some have him just inside the top 100 and some don’t. Now, a few places did place Ortiz higher than any spot Bradfield has been but it took a while for Ortiz to be ranked and Bradfield not so much. Beavers will be there soon enough and since Beavers is much younger, they definitely could value Beavers as much or more than a guy like Ortiz…especially a team that’s far away.
    • I don't want to overstate it but imo having one, or preferably two, slots in the bullpen that you can shuttle guys with is a must.
    • Keep in mind that the bullpen had to cover 6.1 IP yesterday. 4 IP on Friday. All scoreless. Btw. Throwing 13.1 IP in a 3 games series is a ton for a bullpen.  I do agree that we use our pen so much that it would be more valuable to have a shuttle spot as the last spot than a guy like Viera. We should have a fresh arm for every game with the shuttle.
    • I don't think it's an outlier so much as by design.  Elias has been targeting LH bats in the draft. My guess is he thinks he can get a RH bat for the outfield on the cheap if he needs one.
    • Four hits and 2 ER in 1.1 IP is acceptable?
    • Thank you for allowing me to join.  We obviously have more pressing issues to deal with.  And you all have probably been over this a hundred times.  I was thinking about the prospect of losing the Santander and Hays right-handed at-bats in the OF soon (Hays will of course continue to fight into next year) and then I looked at our OF depth and saw almost all lefties in the wings.   Maybe Mayo, Norby and Rhodes will become factors, but when you get right down to it, I don't see a RH hitting, starting OF'er on the horizon.   Am I missing something?  Not a big deal right now, but seems like an outlier thing.
    • I don’t think we see McDermott this year.  His control is a major hurdle.  I’m not sure how Povich would do out of the pen.  I imagine it would be a challenge to get used to. But, I do like the idea of bring pitchers in as a reliever to give them a taste at a young age like the Os did back in the day.
