Armstrong and Fry

Shrug.  It’s a long season.  Everyone is going to be exposed once in a while.  Armstrong is about as average as it gets.   He’s not off to a good start this year but in a few weeks he may turn it around.   Fry’s also pretty average.   Honestly I like Wells and Sceroler better in terms of potential.

Right, and you don' want "average" relievers in high leverage situations. They are both better than they've been, but they are both guys that good teams don't have pitching in high leverage situations.

He misses a lot of bats, throws a lot of strikes and has a career 107 ERA+.

I think he’s better than average POTENTIALLY but he still only has 130 IP in the majors over several seasons.  No one has really given him a good chance and that is with him having some encouraging numbers in the minors (IIrC).

In other words, I’m not sure we really know what he is yet but so far, I like his chances of being better than average.

High leverage situations don’t have to come at the end of the game, so I don’t really know what it means when we say “he shouldn’t pitch in high leverage situations” unless you (or whoever) mean he should only be a mop up guy and that isn’t the case.

Fry looked good tonight ...... he faced 5 batters and got 5 outs, including 3 Strikeouts.

Fourth straight good outing for him.   He really looked shaky in a few early outings but he seems to be putting it together now (crosses fingers).   Last four: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 7 K’s.

Alright, time for me to eat some crow regarding Fry. So far, he clearly looks the part of a late inning high leverage guy in the BP. In command of all his stuff and other than one bad outing early on he’s clearly thriving as one of their best options.

In 6.2 innings pitched we've gone from he's a mop up guy at best to he's a high leverage, late inning potential closer.  God I love early in the season baseball!

Yesterday was by far the best outing I’ve seen from Armstrong this year.   Got behind the first batter 2-0 and from there required only 9 more pitches to get out of the inning, 8 of them strikes.  Struck out two and induced a pop-up to 2B on the other batter.   Let’s hope he’s finding his rhythm.
