J.D. Mundy 2021

Mundy is definitely a guy that stood out it Delmarva...even with Henderson and Westburg. Size and stature wise he reminds me a lot of DJ Stewart. Even at the plate he reminds me of Stewart, but I think he has an even better eye and more pop. In my opinion Baltimore was fortunate to land him like they did.

He's got a very short, compact left-handed swing that generates good power to all fields. Seems to have a nice idea of the strike zone and doesn't looked overmatched by offspeed pitches. I need to see him more against upper velocity, but it's hard not to be impressed with his bat.

Defensively, he's short for a first baseman (listed generously at 6 ft) and doesn't look like he has a lot of quickness over there, but I haven't seen anything that makes me think he can't play there effectively.

Once he made the adjustment at High-A, he's been very impressive. Considering he was basically a senior sign last year, he's been very impressive on his ability to not only hit, but hit for power at the professional level so far.

If he ends up in Bowie the second half of this year and hits well there, I think you have to consider him a legitimate 1B prospect.

One thing to note on Mundy is he's a 20 runner on the 20-80 scale. I mean he might be one of the slowest guys I've seen in a long time. I timed him at 4.7-4.8 going to first base. That might make him a 10 runner if that was possible.

Not surprisingly his only steal was on the back of a double steal against the Frederick Nationals when Gunnar Henderson stole 3rd.

As hard as hits the ball, I'm surprised he only has 6 GIDP so far.

His lack of speed will keep him at 1B or DH and yes, he'll be a base clogger a bit.

Was going to ask if a LH Steve Pearce could be a comp, but it doesn't sound like he could even tread water in the OF given your comments on his foot speed.

Well as far as 1B go he’s playing on the same team with Dashbach, who is a guy we drafted in the 11th rd and paid $100k+ to sign. They’re similar ages and Mundy is outperforming him so far. Despite pedigree and more MILB experience. SSS of course.

Not sure that's a particularly fair juxtaposition given Mundy was undrafted in the five-round 2020 draft with capped bonuses for undrafted guys (i.e., he could have easily been a 6-10th round underslot senior sign in a more normal year).

Melewski did a nice interview of Mundy here: https://www.masnsports.com/steve-melewski/2021/06/not-drafted-last-year-this-player-is-having-a-great-start-on-the-os-farm.html

I found this quote Interesting - something I’d really never thought about regarding the transition from college:

“I just feel like what clicked for me, I just love playing every day,” Mundy said. “In college, you only play weekend games and some midweek games. It helps me to just play every single day and get in a groove. Once I get hot, you always have a game tomorrow to keep it rolling.”

    • If I was a team owner, and my GM radically altered his plan in response to a four-game losing streak that didn't take us out of contention, I'd fire him on the spot. Four games in June tells us nothing other than the team is going through a rough patch.
    • Looking at some of the Marlins starters statcast data, it’s funny how all of them seem to have a lot of subpar data. I wonder if there is something in how the Marlins are teaching them?
    • I doubt that will be the rotation.
    • Grayson, Kremer, Irvin, Povich, McDermott.   YES!!!
    • The title of this thread is pretty ridiculous. We have no idea how people rate the rest of the system.  There was a prospect guy (not sure who it was) on MLb Network a few weeks ago that was saying the Os 15th prospect is a top 5 guy in several organizations. What I would say is if the Os aren’t willing to deal any of their top 3 (hope so) and don’t want to trade Kjerstad, they will struggle to put together an offer to get a TOR guy, if one is even available. I think that’s fair to say.
    • Cleveland arrives off a hot week where they gained AL1 position over the Eastern leaders. Team Stats - their RP are 1st of 30 by fWAR, and their SP are 30th of 30 by fWAR, so pitching that is as 2014 Royals vibe as it gets.     Tanner Bibee is the only one out of the Bieber-Bibee-Gavin Williams top of rotation plan to be present in midseason, and he leads off the series. Steven Kwan has taken the baton from Luis Arraez.    Adley's college teammate's .400 quest will snowball as a story if he stays in range after the All-Star break. David Fry is maybe the league's most random fantastic year out of nowhere, but he made a midgame exit yesterday. For a change they are not leading the league in lowest K%, but they are still Top 5.     Their offensive style has for a lot of years anchored on contact skill, but they don't hit for much power. Jose Ramirez is doing that Marcus Semien thing just stacking those big seasons into the early 30's racing up the Hall of Fame credentials ladder. I don't believe CLE overall is near as strong as BAL-NYY but they have banked a lot of wins.    Their 75 team games YTD is the MLB low, so a lot of offdays and/or rainouts, but a lot of grind ahead for those top relievers who have already been taxed a lot this season.
