Does Jean Carmona still have time to be a prospect?

I think he should still be considered here.  If he weren't ours  already, he's the exact profile of a guy we would be looking to add to our organization.  I hope we find a way to get him at bats for the next couple seasons and see what he can be.

So we basically traded Schoop for Villar as the prospects turned out to either not make the major leagues or we’re not good in a short stint in them.  Villar was actually better then Schoop the rest of 2018 and had a pretty solid 2019 season for us before being shipped off to save money to start the 2020 season for Easton Lucas(yeah I had to look up who he was and if he was still in organization).  Villar has had a decent career after the trade to us with a good year in 2019 and 2021 and is a valuable player then can fill in to the infield positions.  The issue was because of arbitration he got to expensive for his value at a point which made it hard to move him.  Now he is a solid pick up during free agency in the 4-6 million a year range.

Jean Carmona was the junior piece of the Schoop trade, acquired with Jonathan Villar and Luis Ortiz, who are no longer with our organization.    When we acquired him, Carmona was an 18-year old playing in the Pioneer League, which was equivalent to the Appalachian League, somewhere between the GCL and the NY-Penn League.    We didn’t have a team at that level, so we pushed him to (then short season A) Aberdeen in the NYP.   He wasn’t ready, and hit a miserable .226/.280/.301.    They tried it again in his age 19 season, with no improvement: .224/.290/.271.   Though he was still only 19, I think most people wrote him off.

Fast forward past the lost 2020 season.  Carmona started 2021 in extended spring training, not a good sign.  But when Gunnar Henderson was promoted to (now Hi A) Aberdeen, Carmona took his slot at Delmarva.

So far, the results have been decent: .306/.358/.367 in 14 games.   Not a lot of power, but at 21 he’s holding his own in low A as the second youngest player on the team (to Hernaiz).

So, back to the thread title: is there still time for Jean Carmona to be a prospect?

Thanks for the great detail/recap! Sounds promising. Bowie & Delmarva struggling too.

Villar would’ve been a good pickup this year considering where the IF is.

His -.2 WAR would be better than Odor's awful -.4 WAR, but he cost $6 million vs major league minimum. Really Urias should have been the everyday 2B and they should have tried to find a 3Bman to fill in this year vs Odor.
