By my chart, we likely have a minimum of four more players to shed before November 19th. Rylan Bannon, Tyler Nevin, Nick Ciuffo, Spencer Watkins seem like the most likely cuts to me. That leaves no catchers on the 40 going into the Rule V.

Nevin might have a chance to stay. Severino went unclaimed. That shows his value.

Would like to bring Severino back. Understandable his arbitration price was going to be too high. Defensive lapses are annoying to watch but overall product for a complementary catcher is fine. 2.8 WAR in 254 games with us. .765 career OPS against LHP.

All we need though is a cheap, defensive minded backup to Adley.

Adley Rutschman on the horizon and with Severino as perhaps the worst defensive catcher in MLB it's the right move. Even though Severino doesn't hit bad for a catcher, I can't imagine there would have been much of a trade market for him.

Any team that is interested in Severino just had to wait for the Orioles to non-tender him.

Thank goodness Severino is gone.  Only thing better would have been if it happened a few months ago.  It'll be nice to hopefully see someone back there that can actually, you know, catch.

What catchers are available who can be signed for not much over $1 million.  I assume that's about what the O's want to pay Adley's backup.  Could Wynns be brought back to be a backup until Adley is promoted?

I’m not sure why a catcher that completely negates any defensive value he provides and then some with his putrid offense is more valuable than a poor defensive catcher who hits enough to make up for that negative defensive value.

Because a bad defensive catcher effects all your pitchers while a bad offensive catcher is just one bad spot in the lineup.

It’s very hard to quantify a catcher’s defensive impact, but based on the attempts that have been made, it seems that good offense can overcome bad defense for a catcher.  rWAR had Severino at 0.9, fWAR had him at -0.1.   There are several “defensive minded catchers” who are worse than that.  As for the ones who aren’t, we will see how cheap they are.
