Going to head over to the game tonight. Probably wouldn't have if they hadn't called up Stowers.

See, he’s already generating revenue!  Lol

Im actually surprised they are putting him at 5th tonight.  Not that I disagree with it, just surprised they are doing it.

Glad to see Stowers get called up. I'm as future-focused as anyone and understand dealing Mancini/Lopez and even trying to extend control over Gunnar. But this year's team is still competing, and the lineup is glaringly bad. If Stowers is even possibly an upgrade, this is the right move to make.

Like many others here, I’m not sure why Phillips was acquired. It could be that they believe they can fix him, just not at the ML level. Then the DFA now. But then, he isn’t really young, and the upside isn’t much really. And he may not get through waivers.

Perhaps they thought he was fixable and now realize he is beyond their help. Maybe it was because they thought they had a deal for one of their OF’s in place, but it fell through.

We don’t know what they paid in the transaction beyond the prorated salary. It’s a head scratcher, based on what we know. Maybe Elias made a mistake. Or maybe we just don’t know what was going on behind the scene.

Welcome, Kyle!

The Phillips pickup never made much sense to me, but I’m glad it didn’t take Elias long to change course.   Phillips seems like a quality teammate and plays defender but he can’t hit his way out of a paper bag.  With McKenna already here having a guy purely for defensive purposes never made a lot of sense.

Good luck to Stowers.  I’ll go on record as saying I don’t expect him to play every day, or anything close to that.   But it’s nice to have a guy who can hit a little and who’s a decent defender to spell Hays and Santander and be available as a LH pinch hitter.   Our team just got better.

IMO  Phillips was acquired because Hays was hurt.  Hays didn't play for 4 games after Phillips was acquired.   After Mancini was traded they called up Diaz.  Diaz was sent down when Phillips was acquired.

Hays has been playing hurt for some time now and they don't want to IL him for 10 days.

Spending 467K on Phillips was cheap after trading Mancini and Lopez salaries.

Why couldn’t they have brought up Stowers to spell Hays?

Phillips did not play much for us, strictly a bench role. Stowers should have never come up to sit. He still has many things to improve on, and maybe they felt he was better served playing everyday in Norfolk. Now that he is up, he should be in there 5-6 times a week.

It’s possible @wildcard is right. Perhaps they thought Hays would be healthy sooner and that Mountcastle would not struggle the way he did for several weeks. But with the team struggling to hit, they felt the need to DFA Phillips and bring up Stowers. IDK, that makes a little sense to me, but mostly I’m scratching my head.

One can bet that the FO and Hyde are agonizing over the many different roster structures, team -control timelines, playoff probabilities, remaining schedule match-ups, player morale issues, and defensive ramifications that will be triggered by (a) the return of Vavra from paternity leave, (b) the opportunity to call up Henderson next week, and (c) Hall's adapting to a relief role. That Elias was willing to eat crow and DFA the Gulping Glider (Phillips) makes it seem less likely that he'll remain attached to Nevin despite his 2015 first-round pick status (38th overall); in Vavra they seem to have got enough back on the same Givens trade that brought him to the O's.

I keep thinking this was some sort of agreement connected to the Mancini trade at the deadline

This could make some sense.  Maybe they said they don’t want him put him on waivers but if no one picked him up by the deadline they would pick him up and absorb the salary?
