Get real. He’s guaranteed 30.5M this year.  If he doesn’t opt out and has a career ending injury the Mets can decline his 2024 option.  Some team will guarantee him a minimum of 3 years at 30M plus, and probably more years than that.  He’s a huge risk. He’s also the best pitcher in baseball when healthy, has pitched over 200 innings 3 times, and ended 2022 healthy and effective. Why would he opt out?  Seriously?

So you think the rumor about Elias being interested is because he wants to give DeGrom 3/90+?   I think its more likely Elias follows him because he thinks his market may fall.

Whoever gives him the contract you are suggesting is taking a big risk.

Rumors are meaningless.  The point is that Degrom will opt out and there will be competition for his services.  I predict 3/90 is his minimum contract but it’s likely to be more.

On July 18, 2021 deGrom began to feel tightness in his forearm during a bullpen session and was subsequently placed by the Mets onto the 10-day injured list. Later in the month, deGrom also started feeling soreness in his elbow. An MRI revealed inflammation in his elbow, but with no structural damage.[83] On August 20, deGrom was transferred to the 60-day IL to make room for relief pitcher Heath Hembree.[84] deGrom did not pitch for the remainder of the 2021 season.

2022

DeGrom suffered a stress reaction, the precursor to a stress fracture  in his right scapula  during spring training, an injury that caused him to miss the beginning of the 2022 MLB season.

DeGrom made his 2022 season debut for the Mets on August 2nd.

Over the last two years  deGrom  has spent more time on the IL than  on the active roster.

Tell us something we don’t know.  Do you think Degrom won’t opt out?   Do you think a team won’t give him at least a 3-year contract with mucho guaranteed money?

I just saw a New York post article titled “Zach Wheeler: Jabob Degrom happy with Mets but wants to be paid his worth” speculating that DeGromm will opt out due to not getting paid enough despite make 32M. (Sorry phone won’t copy the link)

If he’s unhappy making 32M, do you think the front office is willing to 40 M? I have my doubts.

With all his injuries, should we even bother getting into this bidding with so much risk?

I didn’t suggest they should or would.  You questioned why Degrom would opt out.   It’s a no brainer.

I had to remind myself why deGrom missed so much time in 2021-22.  In ‘21 he had elbow inflammation and never pitched after July 7; he also missed 2-3 starts in May.  In ‘22 he had a stress reaction in his scapula and didn’t pitch in the big leagues until July 31.

So, is it a no brainer that some team will pay him more than $32 mm for 2023?  I’d say it’s more likely than not.

Probably but the reason he’ll opt out is because some team will guarantee him multiple years at big money while he’s currently only guaranteed one year at big money.

Well, I don’t know deGrom’s personality.   Is he someone who will go for the multi-year contract now, knowing that his market may be down a little due to his injuries the last two years?   Or is he someone who will bet on himself to have a big, healthy year and get a better multi-year deal next offseason than he can get right now?    The guy will have made almost $150 mm in his career if he “opts in,” so even though he’d be taking more of a risk, it’s not like he’d be going to the poorhouse if he had a bad year or an injury and ended up doing worse than jr would have done by opting out now.
