Jackson Holliday 2023

We might have to brush up on the nuances of those do you have to be on the roster 8/31 to be tournament eligible thing?     My guess is Kjerstad will earn a sip of coffee by the 8/31 Gunnar-versary, but that would be very quick for Holliday.

I want to say that there is a mechanism for injury replacements to tournament rosters, and something like that might need to be the Holliday path if he demolishes AAA in September.     The 5-6 more weeks of demolishing still required, though he is about 19-for-20 at that year to date.

They should move him up to AAA now.  Lets see if the kid can do it.  Maybe bring him up Sept 3 where he can keep rookie eligilibilty.  If he looks good in Sept maybe he is on post season roster.

Kid is a demon.

Where is he going to play?  Ortiz is at SS, Mayo at 3rd, and Norby at 2nd.

Anybody on the infield can be moved off if need be. I get it and I understand the enormous amount of pride a grown man would have to swallow to be moved off in favor of a literal teenager, and they may feel they dont deserve that. Thing is, deserve has got nothing to do with it.

I would be worried they would try to rotate between the 4 of them.  Maybe it could work if Mayo got more time at first I guess.

You play the #1 prospect wherever it is best for the best prospect in baseball.  Everyone else fits in around him.

This EXACTLY!! People keep trying to treat him like he is in everyone else’ tier or like whatever measurements apply to them apply to him. He is of his own class/caliber. For a 19 year old to be outperforming all other prospects in the game in his first pro season tells me all I need to know. The kid is a supernova!

Holliday is now at a .453 BABIP in AA. He was .405 in A+. I’m not sure what to make of this…there is an element of running a high BABIP that is skill based on your batted ball profile, which particularly shows up in the minor leagues (where BABIP is higher anyway) when a guy is over qualified for that level.

But still, Holliday’s insane AA performance is really fueled by BABIP. 10.3 BB% and 17.9 K% and a .214 ISO are exceptional for a 19 year old at AA, but those don’t scream “he’s ready for AAA or MLB now” the same way his 185 wRC+ does.

Regardless, absolutely not a single red flag in his profile. Could easily argue that he’s already exceeded Adley and Gunnar as prospects. He’s going to be a stud. Only question is when.

Elias & team deserve tons of credit for identifying Holliday as their guy and sticking to it when the industry pretty much consensus thought Druw Jones was a slight cut above. Could have completely changed the trajectory of the franchise for the next 5-7 years.

This. People might not want to bruise the egos of Urias, Ortiz, Norby, Frazier, Mateo, Westburg, etc. Well you know what? They just going to have to eat it and swallow their pride. Maximize the talent on the field.

But we will have to move somebody off the dirt to accommodate Holliday? And? So what?

He'd easily fit in AAA if they'd just promote Ortiz to Baltimore.  That said, I don't mind him playing in Bowie now and there is 0% chance he's in Baltimore any time this season.

While he is really playing great, there is some luck going on.  Watch those 5 hits here.  3 fairly hard ground balls that found holes, an infield dink, then finally elevated something and hit a triple off the wall.  It wouldn't have taken much for that to be a 1-5.

Nobody really doubts that he’s our top prospect by far.  But that’s because of his bat.  Where he should play defensively depends on where he will be of most value to the Baltimore Orioles, based on both his talents and the talents of the other players on the team.  Not based on what is “best” for him personally.  Those two things may coincide, but the may not.

Great post.  I have seen other ones of his “hits” that wouldn’t be in the majors.  That said, everyone gets the benefit of bad defense in the minors and don’t put up his stats.  He does need to develop more power though.  Of course, he is still very young and a tremendous prospect

    • I'm fine with going back to regular extra innings now that the pitch clock has brought normal games times under control. If there's the occasional 18-inning marathon that only takes 3.5-4 hours that's fine. I probably won't see the end of it, but whatever. But I think the driving factor here is not so much game time, but the fact modern teams need 11 pitchers to get through 18 innings. Even 12 years ago we ended up with Chris Davis and Darnell McDonald pitching in a game that long. Today the specialization has gone farther. And to fix that... well, if the pitch clock is minor surgery, and moving the mound back is a lung transplant, somehow getting teams to go back to using starters for seven innings and 1-3 relievers a game is like taking your brain out and getting it to live in a jar on the mantle.
    • Not saying it doesn't matter at all or anything, but I feel like I can't even trust established stats like OBP in the minors, let alone something as esoteric or flimsy as catcher ERA. More and more I just don't know how to interpret minor league stats, haha.
    • I second this for exactly the same reason.  Pitch clock is easily the best thing that’s happened to the game in my lifetime.
    • I wouldn’t call Flaherty a minor trade. He was a proven SP with playoff experience that was having a good year. He was exactly what we’re looking for right now. A SP to get us through the regular season with Game 3 upside. I will agree that we need to do better to win a WS. Probably a lefty with our ballpark.  To that point, Kjerstad is now a member of the mlb team. So is Povich. We’re not trading any of the big 3. How much does McDermott, Norby, Stowers, plus the rest of our 4-system buy us?  Probably not Logan Webb because of the contract, but I think it buys us Kikuchi, and two rental relievers.
    • The we'd also part was me agreeing to his point about Ryan, even if I thought the salary numbers were high.
    • I think he was talking about Ryan Mountcastle but I can understand the pivot.  It’s like the Elvin Hayes turn around bank shot.  It’s always there when you need it.  😀
    • Suarez minor league deal. Cole Sulser. Cesar Valdez. Jorge Lopez. There's a ton, even if some only work out for one year or so.  I think what happens is people look at this year and the lack of waiver/small trade/minor league deal success stories, which is true. Elias hasn't found that guy on waivers or trades this year... yet.
