There’s growing belief the White Sox could hold onto Dylan Cease until the trade deadline. The Orioles have the best prospects but don’t want to part with top infield prospect Jordan Westburg.

What if Westburg is the 2nd piece? It's easy to say it's awful if you only hear 1 name.

I hoped that Westburg would be the player they wanted. I think Ortiz will be better in the long run.

What position does Westburg play when Holliday is promoted?  Where does Ortiz play if the O's keep Westburg.  The O's don't need 8 utility players.  I'm sure we don't know the whole story and I like Westburg, but Westburg, if he's the main piece wouldn't keep me from making this deal.

I wouldn't mind Westburg going to CWS but I'm guessing they are asking for either Cowser/Kjerstad + Westburg. That's likely too much for Cease.

Is it though? You’d all still have Holliday, Mayo, Basallo, one of Cowser/Kjerstad, Bradfield, Ortiz, and literally everyone else from last year who contributed to a 101 win team. They’re not giving up more for Luzardo

I'd say so because it's not just going to end with those 2 players. They wanted two top prospects, check. Those names are likely listed, then they want a couple more on the bubble, and giving up a Povich/McDermott in addition to whomever else they throw in is too much in my opinion. I'm also not very high on Cease, I hate the way his statcast data is trending and his pitch values tanked.

A lot of people here think he's been 2022 Dylan Cease for 4 years and that year is the outlier.

Do the folks here think that Westburg should be on the untouchable list?

Depends on the whole package to me but in the end it’s Elias job to evaluate talent and if he thinks that highly of Westburg I have to trust him on it.    I’m guessing he’s okay giving up some combination of Cowser, Ortiz, Norby, Beavers, etc., which should be enough to get a deal done talent wise.  Looks like Getz is higher on the guys he can’t get.    It’s still just a negotiation.

The report said the Os don’t want to part with Westburg. I’m taking that comment at face value and that’s absurd.

We need Cease a lot more than we need Westburg and Westburg makes much more sense to deal than Kjerstad or Cowser.

So at face value "they don't want to part with Westburg" with no other context suggests its a 1:1 deal. I agree, that's awful. If you believe the insiders on the Sox site, they claim it's Cowser/Kjerstad + Westburg. They will want more after that as well. Still awful?

Maybe we can have Cease and keep Westburg too.   You can keep playing pretend GM with Chicago White Sox while Elias does the real thing.

Personally I’m ok with Kjerstad and Westburg, I don’t need another piece that IMO helps both teams accomplish what they’re looking for

That certainly changes the picture some, but I don't know how realistic it is. I'm sure Getz would want some lotto tickets or high upside youngins thrown in.

Yeah, but your argument is that we should pay Getz’ ask because we can afford to not because it’s a fair deal for each side.   Cease guarantees us nothing.   We’d like to have him but we don’t have to have him.

I'll go out on a limb and say that there is zero chance Getz is proposing Westburg as the headliner with Beavers and Povich. He's asking for Cowser/Kjerstad + Westburg and likely Povich/McDermott and a 4th piece.

If the deal was Westburg/Beavers/Povich, Cease would have been announced as an Oriole already.

    • I just got power on in Savannah, I hope those we have not heard from are well.
    • I think the point about Gunnar being left handed does swing this in his favor, if it’s an Os specific question. No sense in having your main stud player hitting warning track lasers that would be HRs in 29 other ballparks, over and over again. We may find out exactly how frustrating that is when it comes to Mayo the next couple years  Hopefully we find out! As for the speed, Witt is of course faster. But Gunnar had 20+ stolen bases himself this year. Not like he’s slogging around out there. And Gunnar is a fantastic baserunner overall   I think the defense is closer than people think too. Easy to be biased negatively because Gunnar struggled for a bit there. But there’s a reason we were all so surprised by that - he’s been rock solid otherwise.    Lastly if we had Witt, we wouldn’t have Adley.  Which still matters despite his tough second half. That element (which I realize isn’t necessarily part of the question) makes it a complete no-brainer.
    • I'm sure they had to hold a certain number of decent seats back for MLB and corporate sponsors for the playoffs.
    • Maybe a groundball back to Cano.
    • They've upped the prices back to $77. They've also opened up a lot more sections for purchase. I found this very frustrating when I went to a game a few weeks ago. Many sections appeared sold out and then they added seats for purchase a couple of weeks before the game. Perhaps it has to do with season ticket holders deciding to not go to the game and then the tickets become available?
    • I reckon it’s because Bowman is a contact guy. I know his strikeout rate was 8 with the O’s, but historically he’s been more of a 7 SO/9, so Selby does bring more of the strikeout potential. Although, ideally, you don’t want either of those guys pitching in the playoffs. But hey, maybe Selby ends up being That Guy for us.
    • I know you know, but we gotta adjust from just to cover innings over 162 to playoff time. We won’t need more than Burnes, Eflin, Coloumbe, Cano, and Dominguez. Maybe one of Akin/Perez.
