Cease vs everyone else

One of the better baseball geek observations I've heard about the Padres is they have a poor understanding of what makes a fastball good apart from velocity, and were he acquired I'd have some hope BAL could get a little better overall production out of him than CHW-SDP have.

The extreme barrel% regression aligns with this.

When the Burnes trade happened I don't think I saw a single poster saying that would have rather had Cease.

No one thought Burnes was available.

This just strikes me as an odd post.

Not so odd of a post with no game yesterday. It’s probably why some prefer FB.  The OP was thought out and even provided an infographic. Plus, the Cease thread was one of the more popular thread in OH history.

It’s cool to revisit. But, I agree. The Burnes thread would’ve been just as long, but nobody thought he was actually available.

Overall, I’m glad we gave Burnes. Now we just have to resign him, but I’m enjoying the ride.

I'm talking about the tone.  It's like they are gleeful that Cease is going through a rough patch.

That barrel% regression is really surprising. I haven't looked into his repertoire or to see if there is some difference in how he's pitching, but that's a crazy drop off.

I wanted him and was willing to give up Westburg for him before the Burnes trade. I'm glad I'm not the Orioles GM now! lol

Saying that, I do think the Orioles may have gotten a bit better out of him. Plus, out of those last seven starts, he's really only pitched poorly twice including the last game where he allowed seven runs to balloon his ERA.

With all the injuries we've head, I still wouldn't be upset with him in the rotation now. But if Suarez can keep it up and start getting through 6 more often, he's basically what we had hoped Cease would have been for us.

Some may feel that way, but I'm wishing that they would have landed them both. Even before the injuries the starting pitching was going to be a little light next season... it's possibly going to be brutal now. Either way, I'm going to enjoy 24 before worrying about next season.

I would have been fine with him too "at the right price".  I do trust our wizards more than theirs as well.  Pitch mix and sequencing matters.  I haven't looked beyond what Malike posted but maybe there's something there.  Or maybe tipping?

I'm glad for Manny that Cease is helping SDP stay in the mix, and rooting for them to get their shot at the Dodgers in the 5-game format.

It is just a baseball barstool debate, but would you give Corbin Burnes to get Dylan Cease this week?

If it goes bad, Seidler's successors fire Preller and introduce austerity measures for the partners, I still see Dylan Cease as a strong consider to be Burnes' successor on the 2025 Orioles owing to that sweet, sweet 1-year term.

Padres fans aren’t glad Machado isn’t helping with his .672 OPS.

Unless the Padres fall way out of contention for the 3rd WC, Preller will probably try to add again. He’s completely gutted the Padres and will be stuck with many of the worst contracts in sports.

I'd have been fine with both but I never thought that adding two impact starters was an option.

I was hoping for more bullpen help.

That still rates 95 OPS+ with the league down.     He's "posting up" like he learned from Buck and Adam.

I agree that's what Preller will try to do - it is just a question if the new owners can him and retrench financially.

Other than Bohm or Riley, I'm not sure there's another NL 3B a team would rather have for the rest of the season.

It would have been an unnecessary luxury at the time.

Well if we trade Westburg, we still have Ortiz and really aren’t any worse off.

And Ortiz was why I as willing to part with Westburg. The problem is the was probably don't get Burnes without Ortiz so that really wasn't on the table. I'd rather have Burnes for this year than Cease for two.

Sure but I think that should be more of the focus. Burnes > Cease but if Burnes doesn’t happen and we get Cease in a deal with Westburg, I think we would all be ok with cease here and having Ortiz instead of Westburg.

Cease has been absolutely brutal his last 7 starts. His total numbers are only impressive because of how dominant he was to start the year, but there's zero to like about his last 7:

6.27 ERA, 4.70 FIP, 867 OPS against

He's really reverting back to how poor he pitched at times last season.
