Athletic, Maeda an option for Orioles (Signs 2 year deal with Detroit)

I've read a couple of Matthew Postins' posts over the last week or so, and while he has a vague, basic understanding of the O's, it's pretty clear that he's posting whether or not he has anything that qualifies as news.  The internet hustle - ain't it grand?

He'd be an upgrade over Gibson in terms of performance, though not durability.  He is not obviously better than Dean Kremer.   Elias says that he wants someone who would clearly slot into the top half of the Orioles rotation; Maeda wouldn't fit that description.

Respectfully disagree. Maeda, when healthy, is a significantly better pitcher than Kremer. His numbers last season were skewed by a 10 run / 3 inning outing that he had in April when he was pitching injured.

I would be thrilled if we signed Maeda. He would be a SIGNIFICANT upgrade over Kyle GIbson. The only negative with him is his injury history and the fact that we'd really have to manage his workload. When he was on the Dodgers they used to give him phantom IL stints to keep his innings down and it seemed to be keep him fresh and mostly healthy. Also, when you look at Maeda's 2023 you should really toss out his 3 inning / 10 run outing in late April because he was pitching injured that game.

An interesting side note is that it was reported earlier in the week that Yoshinobu Yamamoto preferred to play with other Japanese players. If we signed Maeda we'd technically have a Japanese player on the roster...

He could easily be our third best starter…but health and durability are a real concern

He has also thrived in the pen in the past.

The same could be said about Wells.

Maybe the O's could just have Wells and Maeda take each other's turn in the rotation!

Elias likely isn’t going for a 36 yo pitcher who hasn’t made 30 starts since 2016.

I agree.  Elias has shown that he places high value on durability and availability.   Hence, Lyles and Gibson.  I expect him to try to move up the effectiveness chain while still valuing those other traits.

And Cole Irvin who made 30 starts in two consecutive years.  Also, Elias gave up Hernaiz for a pitcher with 4 years of service time.  I think he’s going to be more reluctant to give up significant prospects for a one year rental like Burnes or Bieber which is why I think Cease with 2 years is the most likely unless there’s a surprise for a pitcher with even more service time.

The phantom IL stints could be a feature from a team perspective too.  It could be how tomorrow’s rookies are integrated into a competitive team structure. Managed IL stints give us a chance to give some ML exposure to the guys on the fringe:  Hall, Wells, Irvin, Armbreuster, McDermott, Povich.  Without locking them into being “the guy” we need as our #3 in crunch time unless they prove they can handle it.

Did you see where his people immediately refuted that claim?

He's not eliminating any landing spots at the moment.
